Carpentry - Insurance Reimbursement - Help!

I had a flood last year and ruined home. Insurance covers the damage to structure but not contents. I have a guy that does good work but did not have a valid license and insurance. I was supposed to find someone that had both valid license and boned and insured. The problem was that they could not get paid until have the property had been re-inspected. I paid the guy to complete my home out of my pocket so now I am trying to figure out how to get reimbursed. How should i take care of this when I was told proof of there licensing needed to be submitted first. Please help!

Is this a NFIP claim managed by you HO carrier?
Who wants to inspect? The carrier or your mortgage company?
Who has the $?

Some carriers will not pay contractor OH&P to a HO { custonmary 20%.} RCV may not have been paid either.

You may need to find some local help that is insurance restoration wise to review your file and help you get what you are due per the provisions of your policy.

You come here, where most of the posters are licensed contractors and ask us how to avoid following the same rules we have to follow. I will not apologize for the comments of others, but I have no sympathy for you. You chose your path, and now you want advice. In Oregon, if you hire an unlicensed contractor and have a problem, the contractor's Builders Board will not help with any problems you have. Last week I got an emergency call from a resturant. The complaint was no gas to the grille. This at 5:20 PM, dinner rush. They hired an unlicesened company to service the fire suppression system. The person, I will not call him a technician, tripped the fire suppression system. The gas valve tripped and came apart. That the gas valve came apart may not have been dumb twits fault. But the duct tape he applied to hold the gas valve together was his fault. I supplied a valve, the furnace tech replaced the valve, the electricain wired the valve. It took 3 of us to fix what one person screwed up. The dumb twit also installed the wrong fusible links, did not replace other worn parts and did not follow NFPA codes to service the fire extinguishers. yesterday, I looked at another resturant. Same guy, did not replace parts needed to properly service the fire suppression system. I immediatly called the Construction Contractors Board and left a messge for the compliance division. Yesterday, while I was out working, the complainace officer called. Monday, I will call again and file a complaint. The nice thing is I have had dealings w/the compliance officer. He used to be a dry-wall contractor and had to deal w/unlicensed contractors on a daily basis. He has no sympathy for unlicensed contractors, or those who hire them.

Last week I got was e-mailed a story from the Oregonian. Fire Extinguisher Service Company of Beaverton sent a person to work on a fire alarm system. The unlicensed person reported the fire alarm system was working properly. It was not. The Lake Oswego PD arrested the guy. He was charged with 85 counts of reckless endangerment, one count for each resident of the complex. Each count maximum is 1 year in jail and $6250.00 fine.

In Oregon, you can be charged with up to $1,000.00 per day for working w/o a permit. This can be either or both the person doing the hireing and doing the work. The work may have to be redone or someone hired to inspect the job and say it meets code. I personally would have a difficult time accepting responsiblity for work done by others, especially an unlicensed hack.

You are in a tough spot. Tough chit.

fireguy, an as*hole when it comes to unlicensed workers.

A bit off topic but, I also monitor an AHJ board. The fire alarm fiasco was discussed on that board. One of the persons responsible for enforcing life & safety rules thought it would be a good idea if those servicing fire alarms were licensed. I just rolled my eyes.
