Carpenters Apprenticeship

I have been researching a union carpenter apprenticeship program. I am in Cincinnati Oh. I have read other posts on this site but I still have a few questions.

1. I assume the apprenticeship is through the union and not a company?
2. If I get accepted into the program does the union find a job for me?
3. Is there a lot of turnover in the progrmas?

I am in OH and I think the journeyman rate is around $28.00 an hour. So I would start at around 60% of this.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Carpenters Apprenticeship

Here in California, someone who wishes to enter the union as an apprentice needs to go out and find a union company willing to hire..or "indenture" them, as it's called here...as a first period apprentice. Once they get someone to hire them, they go to the union hall and sign up. Next they go to work for that company immediately. Approximately 6 months later you get a letter from the apprentice training facility telling you it's time to go to school. The schooling lasts for 2 weeks consiting of 4 ten hour days per week. When you complete the 2 weeks of schooling, you become a 2nd period apprentice...which comes with a pay raise. During this 2 weeks, you are entitled to collect unemployment....After you complete the school, you go back to work at your new pay rate. This ritual repeats every 6 months....There are 8 "periods" to the apprenticeship program then you become a journeyman. It takes about 4 years.

Re: Carpenters Apprenticeship

Answers to your questions.

1. It is through the union and based on state requirements as it is accredited trade schooling.

2. It depends how your local and regional council operates. Best to go to the local hall and talk to a Business Agent. If they are not in get their number.

3. You get out of the program what you put in. They say it takes 4 years but you could journey much sooner or later.

Beacause different regional councils operate differently you may only have to do one week of school every 6 months also with the one week you will need 600 hours to advance to the next period.
