Career Advice?

I am interested in starting a small contracting/Sub-Contracting business on the side at first but just gathering info at this stage.

Alittle about myself:

Ive been working in the construction field most of my life, my dad and uncle built houses for many years. Ive been everything from a gopher to forman/lead carpenter over the years.

Just graduated 2 years ago from Southern Illinois University with degrees in:

Assoc of Science in Construction Technology
Bachelors of Science in Construction Management

Anyway Ive been working as a Project Engineer for a small commercial general contractor in Chicago for the past 2 years since i graduated. However im i have to wear a suit and tie and im stuck in an office 60 hours a week reviewing plans and crucnhing numbers.

Needless to say i hate it, i didnt get into the construction industry to be stuck in an office all day.

SO TO MY REAL QUESTION:

I want to start a small contracting business hopefully on the side at first.
But im just curious want type of subcontracting business's are hot right now?

And how did u guys go about getting started, i have about $15000 to invest initially?

I was thinking maybe i could buy a small piece of equiptment like a Bobcat, Ditchwitch or something like that and get a few jobs

Anyway if u guys have any suggestions or advice i could sure use it right now

Re: Career Advice?

Maybe start with home repairs...little investment and what you grew up with?

Siding repair/replace a little painting?? I just might make you appreciate the office

Re: Career Advice?

I agree. You shouldn't start out with expensive equipment. Start small and see what niche you want to get into. Now is the time to do research and gather require licenses/insurance. Don't operate without either.

By the way, what "side work" are you going to do with a Bobcat?
