This unique space ship house has been recognized throughout the United States and featured in many newspaper and magazine articles. And is now available for a new owner. It has been featured on HGTV several times. This Space Ship Home has a view of the Tennessee River as well as Beautiful Views from Signal Mountain. This area is Upscale Chattanooga, Tennessee. The structure is a large saucer suspended a story off the ground (with parking underneath) on six large re-enforced cement pillars and all situated on wonderful lot with scenic views.

While we're posting ugly/weird houses here's my old neighbors house, it's a funky one, but I think it was done by a famous architect. The price tag if it were sale would make you cringe.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — A mountainside house being auctioned in Tennessee is perfect for anyone tolerant of gawkers and fascinated with outer space: It's built like a flying saucer. The home "landed" on a twisting road leading to Chattanooga's Signal Mountain in 1970 — just after television executives grounded the run of the original "Star Trek" series. It will be sold to the highest bidder Saturday.

The circular house — ultramodern when it was built — is ringed with small square windows and directional lights and perched on six "landing gear" legs. It has multiple levels, three bedrooms, two baths and an entrance staircase that retracts with the push of a button.

Terry Posey, an agent with Crye-Leike Auctions of Cleveland, Tenn., said the current owner has had the property only four months and didn't want to comment. Posey posted an e-Bay ad and said he already has a $100,000 bid.

John Kleeman of Litchfield, Conn., an attorney and space culture enthusiast, said he knows of variations of the flying saucer design in Florida, Connecticut and California.

The flying saucer designs popped up about the time of the moon landings. "That's when all the excitement was," Kleeman said.

The Chattanooga home's unusual shape — sort of like two white Frisbees pasted together — poses some interior decorating challenges. The curve of the exterior creates a sloping ceiling and short side walls, but there's also a striking curved bar and a custom bathtub.

The house is larger than the prefabricated and movable UFO-shaped structures, known as Futuro houses, designed by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen in 1968.

"It really looked like a spaceship ready to take off," said realtor Lois Killebrew, who handled an open house at the first sale of the Chattanooga home decades ago.

The late Curtis W. King and his family built the unusual home because "they liked to do unusual things," Killebrew said.

UFO Space House. Balmoral - Chattanooga, Tennessee - UFO "Space" House Auction

The flying saucer-shaped "Space House" on Chattanooga's Signal Mountain will be sold in an auction on March 15, 2008. It's not a Futuro saucer house, but a more custom dwelling, white with windows girdling the center and a balcony facing the woods. The Space House is suspended on six concrete pillars with 2,000 square feet of living space that includes three bedrooms and two bathroom.

Owned for a long time by a mysterious-but-friendly (our favorite combination) couple, the house was first reported on sale in Spring 2007.

Twelve years ago I was in college, selling books door-to-door to pay my credit hour fees. I was with a girl who was teaching me how to sell - it was my first night. We walked up to this house and just gawked, it was so out of place with the rest of the "average middle-America" looking neighborhood.

I don't remember how we got their attention, but the residents dropped a staircase out of the bottom of the "ship", just like in the movies. An elderly lady asked if we'd like to see their home, and we walked up into it. I'll tell you, the people are nice though not very talkative. Very nice though. The inside is eclectic city. Black and white checkered floor, a suit of mail, a stuffed panther coffee table...very very interesting.

I was trying to be polite, and so I didn't ask many questions and we were only there long enough to show our books and leave. But I kick myself everyday for not asking why they chose the design for the house.

The two elderly people, strangest of all, were dressed in quite normal attire. I think the man was wearing a mechanics overalls. The only reason I pause to comment is because - now a teacher - I was telling my students about this interesting experience and promised them I'd check online to find out if it had all been a dream! Nope...! The Flying Saucer House remains the single most baffling, yet intriguing, thing I have ever seen, next to a David Lynch movie. [Adam Ferguson, 02/13/2007]

This house is on Signal Road, about halfway up the mountain in one of the switchback curves. An elderly couple has owned and lived in the house for as long as i know. the house is shaped like a "UFO" and rests on six "legs". The couple parks their van underneath the house and go up stairs that protrude from the bottom, like what you see on TV. The house is particularly odd, due to it being located in one of the most affluent areas in the Chattanooga area. [Andi Weaver, 06/24/2001]

The Flying Saucer. This is a home shaped like a white flying saucer made of concrete. It's on the road going up the hill that leads from Chattanooga to Signal Mountain. It's a startling thing to see.

Also--I was recently driving through NW S.C. on the way from Augusta to the interstate. In a county seat I passed through somebody had a locomotive engine and two passenger cars in the yard beside their house. . . [George Spencer, 02/07/1997]

There is one of these houses in Covington Kentucky also. It is painted a stainless silver color. If I get a chance I will drive by and take some pics. It is in a odd place surrounded by condo's that overlook the river.
