Can Anyone Tell Me The Best Study Material...

Can anyone tell me the best study material for the CA general contractor's exam? I'm scheduled for the law/business as well as the class "B" general contractor's portion in about 1.5 months. Also, if possible, I'd like to keep it around $200.00 down and would like online study material, not classroom! I've taken other state exams and found that there are materials that contain questions from the database of real questions administered from real past exams and I've always done well with those. Study, memorize, pass. Super easy so if anyone knows of anything like that, it would be great. Thanks!

In my opinion, the only study materials that are worth a s##t are the practice exams you will find at an axam prep place. Those are kept under lock and key because they are the key to passing the test. I went to Avis Contractors Exam School in Garden Grove, Ca. for my exam prep, and I can say with confidence that the books and tapes alone are NOWHERE NEAR ENOUGH to get you through the test. You MUST take the practice tests multiple times and memorize the answers.

Here is how I went about my studying: I would take the practice tests as many times as I had time for. Before even attempting to answer correctly, I would go to the back of the book and look up the correct answer to every question. This was so I didn't cloud my memory with any incorrect answers. Then I would go back to the test which now had all the right answers, and try to memorize them. Then I would take the test over and over until I had all the tests nailed. I passed the exam easily after doing this repeatedy until I knew all the answers with 100% certainty.

Mike, thank you, that's exactly what I was thinking... so are these something one can purchase somewhere, online etc, etc? I see that a couple of places offer them or say they're the practice exams but I don't know if they're the real thing or not. Many places offer practice tests but that doesn't mean they're the right ones, if you know what I mean? Anyway, anyone else have any info? Thanks!

As far as I know, the real practice tests are kept under tight wraps by the schools. Those are the key to passing and if they were just available on the internet, they would be out of business. At the school I went to, they went as far as to have video cameras in the study room to make sure nobody stole them, copied them, or even took pictures of them.

I agree 100%.I studied the books and cd's for weeks. Then two days before my test date I was in class room 8 hours each day. There is no way an online only course would be as good as a classroom one.Mike is right, the schools keep the test questions under lock and key.The only way you are going to take them is in a class room...I studied 400 differnt law questions the first day and 400 trade questions the second and went in to the test with a lot of confidence...Pased both with an hour to spare on each.

If you know your trades and study the law in advance, after a good study course and classromm cram session you should have no wories...
I went to License Instruction Schools...http://www.contractorschool.com/
They guarantee you will pass or you get a refund on the tuition. Good luck.

The site I mentioned above gives you 60 days access to practice tests. You can take them over and over. I did it the day before my test, almost all the questions were word for word.

Griff, is it CA and is it for "law/business" and general contracting and by who? Maybe I'll grab it from you.

Thank you.

Re: Can Anyone Tell Me The Best Study Material...

I have both law and business and the general contracting, and they are by Paul Lucente (I got them from buildersbook). I took the tests today and passed easily without any class. Let me know if you want it, if not I am going to put it on ebay next week. Also, if you have any questions about the test feel free to email me @ griffingerritsen@msn.com

Hey Griff. Congratulation first of all. I'm freaking out about my exam tomorrow as well. I am also studying the exam questions from Buildersbook, but I dont' know if I'm using the same one as you do. I have the QuickPass General Building B Examination with the blue cover. It also comes with a CD software. Tell me we have the same book so I can feel more confident tomorrow lol

Thanks
