Brick Work On Exterior Of Fireplace

We are building a house and as part of the design there is a chimney jutting out of the walthat is framed in wood ...well we thought it would be best to have this coveed in stone all the way to the top (three stories)...I am getting quotes of $11,000 just for the labour to do the stone work on the chimney...this seems very high...I have seen some people simply cover these with siding the same as the rest of the house exterior...I am concerned that the chimney is not protected by the roof and the siding will look like crap in a few years

Questions:

1. Does that $11,000 quote not seem outrageous -- we have got similar quotes from 3 people now - this seems like a 2 day job -- who makes $11,000 for two days work????

2. What other options do i have - I do not want the chimney to be left in plywood - I guess I can get my contractor to cover it with something else ?stucco or cement tile or would this also require the $11,000 per 2 day brick layer to do ..

thanks

Joe

Does that include materials?...If so, that sounds reasonable to me for a three story stone chimey (flashed to roof?)...How many square feet of stone are you talking about?

Natural stone or manufactured?

BTW, there are taxes on that money, insurace, equipment maintenance, workmans comp insurance to pay, gas, set up time, and other things that have to be paid for.

Re: Brick Work On Exterior Of Fireplace

its manufactured stone - but again this does not include the materials at all.....so if this is fair price then let me know --- If not then I am interested in whether there is another material that maybe my general contractor can put up himself (he is doing the cedar siding on the house)....Is it possible to tile it with a concrete tile product or slate or something or is there anything else that does not necessarily require a stone layer....

Not sure how many sq feet you have? If you know how many sq it is it might be easier.

Where are you located?

located in vancouver, canada

not sure of exact square footage -- but it extends out one foot and is 20 feet high.

Also, just to be clear - we are not talking about building a chimney as it is just a faux chimney that is framed with wood - so this is just related to putting stone covering over the wood frame.

Re: Brick Work On Exterior Of Fireplace

In my area in Wisconsin $11k would be laughed off the property line for that.

I would get about $1200-1500 for that.

1' x 2' x 1' x 20' high; Manufactured stone; : Labour only.

We'd charge aprx; $ 5,000 here in Colorado, USA

We're a general contractor, but do masonry sometimes in-house. I'm sure a masonry contractor would charge considerably less.

Is it on the side of a cliff or otherwise inaccessable? When you say labor only, do you mean that the hardi backer or lath/scratchcoat is already applied? Which particular stone is it, or is it faux brick? You say 20', but that is only 2 stories, max, are you sure of those dimensions?

It still seems high, but there may be mitigating factors.

Re: Brick Work On Exterior Of Fireplace

it is on a steep slope.....
The chimney is on the outside of a curved roof house - so while the house is 3 stories the fireplace only goes up 20 feet as it does span along the outside wall which is shorter (ie the house gets taller as you go in from the outside wall)
My frustration is that initially i wanted a real stone chimney but was talked out of it as I was told it would be too expensive - but now just the siding of stone is going to cost so much that i wonder whether we should have built a real stone structure.
Its faux stone we were thinking of just to keep the price down and becasue the lower part of the chimney is not even that visible....but again , the quotes i am getting are for just the labour.

Re: Brick Work On Exterior Of Fireplace

If you're getting quotes all around the same price there must be a reason for it. I could see if only one was that high, but when they are all coming back like that......
