Best Way To Ventilate A Hot House?

HO's house is approximately 2000 sq ft one story ranch. The house is hot on the inside ,84 degrees inside but 80 degrees outside. There is more than enough intake from the soffits and they have 1 roof fan rated for 3200 cfm. But the house is still warmer inside that out. Short of turning on the A/C in spring time and turning off in Fall are there any suggestions?
The HO's son has bad allergies and i can't install a whole house fan because of the pollen.
Thanks

Convection, conduction, radiation.

Does that also mean they cannot open the windows to circulate air? Convection.

Do they have lots of glass facing sunlight? Large curtains to block sunlight. Radiation.

Don't have one off hand for conduction unless you wanna go geothermal.

My daughter had asthma as a child and we got all kinds of breaks from a tax deductable $3.5K A/C filtration system to power. It might be worth looking into in your area.

If they have the budget install some replacement windows with 2 layers of low e film. This will reflect the heat. You can see this work at a most window stores or at a home show where the sunroom people have heat lamp samples set up.

SupriorBuilt,

40 to 50 factors that could be considered after a detailed look at the site. Please post alot of details or save your time and advise HO what you suspect, but you may want to advise HO to get an arch or engr to evaluate and come up with recommendations.

Whats the construction?- U- factor? what changes or additions in products (R value) are cost effective???????????? Plant some shade trees??? Add a sprinkler on the roof???

Re: Best Way To Ventilate A Hot House?

The house has a southern exposure. It's in the sun all day. There are 40 ' pine trees that line the propoerty on all sides but they do not provide the protection as large oak trees would. The attic has R-30 insulation on top of the original insulation. The front windows have all been replaced with Smonton 5500 series low e-glass windows. The rear windows are Andersons.
Most of the exterior walls have R-15 insulation installed within the last 5 years along with new siding in front and original mineral siding on the rest of the house. The roof was replace with in the last 8 years as a nail over. the house was built in 1972.
Any suggestions?

Make sure the heat is off.

SuperiorBuilt,

I'm sure you checked the proper vent for the blown-in R-30.

I'm not a Fan of nail overs. How are those 8 year old shingles looking?
( if this roof was a 4:12 in FL I'd give it 2-4 years more)

The added layer holds heat and radiates through to the conditioned space. You could consider a radiation barrier, but this will cook the shingles faster. This problem could go away when they re-roof to bare deck.

good luck.

Excellent, excellent, excellent.

This is where you start. Always.

Without a site visit, I can only guess at the best course of action.

It sounds like the solar energy entering the house, and the heat being generated by other sources within the house are being contained by the insulation.

The attic fan is on the OTHER SIDE of the insulation.

You need to vent the interior SEPARATELY, or you need to block more of the solar energy, or you need air conditioning; or some combination of the three.

Best regards,
Michael

Re: Best Way To Ventilate A Hot House?

I agree the second layer of roofing is definitelty not helping matters. HO says other people in the neighborhood have the same problem including those with tear offs of the roof done with the new shingles. Again the central Air is installed but it is very expensive to run. Yes it does the job but the HO is looking to away to pull the cooler air in to the house but can not use a whole house fan because of son's allergies. BTW Average electric bill including the cost to run the central air during the summer is about $500 to $600 per month for electric only . Yes these are benefits of living in part of the country with expensive electric rates .

2000 SF AND $ 550 / month ELECTRIC!!!!! ? sorry for shouting.

Double check the meter and the wires. ( any neighbors hooked up too?) How many KWH at what rate?

I would start with a good slick sales team: opening up a solar hot water heater division

then

I would look at wind power generation div.

then

etc.....

None of the neightbors are hooked into the house .LOL
Yes the electric utility is proposing a windmill farm in the ocean but that will probably more expensive then the nuclear power plant that was built but never really went on line . We are still paying for that . This is the reason why electirc is so expensive
