Basement Remodel Again

ok so you all helped me in your answers and I am going with the 2x4 walls because my hose is only 10 years old. Now Im getting ready to start this remodel and I have more ?? First I am getting 2x4 pressure treaded lumber for the bottom plate. My questions is what to use to fasten them to the concrete floor. Use the 22 cal gun, or a hammer drill and screw. I am going to be writing you all over the next few months of you help By the way we live in suny Syracuse Ny Thanks all Mark

Yes you need P.T. whenever wood makes contact with concrete, when I do install these I would shoot them down with a Hilti.

IMO, - - the nails will be quicker, - - the screws will be better. Either way, use construction adhesive also to 'lessen' the amount of fasteners required. Let the adhesive 'tack' for a few minutes before setting each plate.

The hammer drill and tapcons take more time but for one, they're less expensive (not a lot but a little) and two, there is less chance of you causing cracks in the slab. Just my opinion...

There ya go. Whichever you want depending on the tools you have. The tap cons will take at least 5-10 times longer to do. I use the hex headed ones and an impact driver to set them.

I just talked to our family out in Utica, seems you guys are having a bit of a cold spell.

Hey Mark,
Go with the tapcons. You won't need many just a couple per 10' and as Tom pointed out use heavy duty Const adhesive. Built the walls tight and shim the tops to put pressure on them.
If you need any help I'm in Liverpool.

Good luck.

Re: Basement Remodel Again

Well I was leaning towards the stud gun and the 22cali and using the adheisve but I am afraid I will shoot my eyes out. Heee but I thought by adding a couple more and predrilling near the ends it would give me a soild bottom base and no Mike its some what warm 53 yesterday. Im so ready to start just order the framing studs today also would you guy recommend adding insulation between the wall studs and a plastic barrier I alredy have the insultion that they attached to the concrete block???

Some will laugh, but I use the "Wire Nail" method used by concrete guys with the exception of the double headed nails. I am able to pull the most banana'ed plate directly on the line.

I put the plate on the line, rotohammer a 3/16 hole through the plate and into the cement, put tie wire into the hole, then nail a 16d gal nail into the plate. It hold tighter than anything I have tried before. This was the only method I found to work with 100 year old concrete. A little more time, maybe and maybe not, but I do tend to 'overbuild'.

On a side note, anyone that doesn't use pressure treated lumber as the bottom plate should not be in this business.

A little bit of over kill, but I like to put down building paper between P.T and concrete floors.
