ASTM - What's The Difference?

Every so often JLC quotes ASTM standards. What’s the difference between ASTM standards and IBC/IRC standards, and if a contractor has the IBC and IRC, why would he need a book on ASTM construction standards?

Re: ASTM - What's The Difference?

ASTM standards are generally for testing or qualification of the material being used. For me in concrete work, the mix supplied should be mixed in accordance with ASTM ***, the rebar should meet the standards of ASTM ***, etc. I think usually it's up to the suppliers to ensure their product meets those requirements. The installer should verify that they do through a submittal from the supplier.

Re: ASTM - What's The Difference?

What he said, mainly.

ASTM standards are used to codify material properties, and how to test them, while building codes give a minimal requirement for construction practices.

Where he is wrong is that it is the supplier's job to ensure that a particular product meets specified standards. Not true. It is the contractors job to do so; it is the suppliers job to provide documentation for the products that the CONTACTOR specifies (as opposed to the project specifications, which the supplier in most cases is not a party to). Been there and testified in court on this one.

And while we are discussing Specifications and Submittals, note that it is the contractor's responsability to ensure that all products used meet the specifications, even if improper products are submitted and accepted!
