I don't know if Michigan has other restrictions on NFA weapons, but according to the federal government, in order to register or transfer an already registered NFA weapon, all you have to do is pay for a $200 tax stamp, submit to a background check, and have your local sheriff sign off (the last two to make sure of who is paying the tax of course, since it's a tax law, not a gun control measure). Of course, with autos, they stopped registering new automatics in 1968 for imported weapons and 1986 for domestic made weapons, so you are limited to buying those guns that are already registered. as a result, the guns usually cost 10x more than the semi auto versions of them. the cheapest you are going to find anywhere is probably a $3000 mac-10, and M-16s are running $15-20k.

other than that, if you have a company with a class II license, you can build and buy new automatic weapons for research purposes, but the BATF will come down hard on you if they decide that the purpose of your company is for recreation, rather than business. Also, a class III license will allow you to be a dealer of automatic weapons to government agencies, and will also allow you purchase new full auto, provided you have a letter from one of those government agencies, that states that they are interested in that firearm, and would like to test it.

that sounds about right for one of the licenses, but those licenses apply to a company, not a person. The BATF also will get real interested if it looks like your company exists for the sole purpose of buying toys for personal recreation. Provided that you live in an NFA friendly state, with a NFA friendly sheriff, and are willing to settle for auto weapons made before 1986, and are willing to pay the high prices, and wait for your paperwork to be completed, then there are no more restrictions on automatic weapons than any other firearm. Back when you could register new automatic weapons, some people registered the fire control groups that converted semiauto guns to full auto. as a result, you can now buy registered AR-15 lightning links and registered HK auto sears. Then you can buy any modern versions of those guns, for example, a new colt Hbar, or a semiauto MP5, and drop in your registered part, and end up with a full auto m16 or MP5.

Mack 10's, due to the fact that they are among the cheapest ways to get into the full auto game, are very popular with people looking to mod them into something completely different- They build a new top receiver to do what ever they want, and that fits on their registered lower receiver.
