Any Idea How Our Truck Got Broken Into?

This happened last November. My husband is religious about locking all the boxes on his truck every night. It was a clean job. He didn't even realize it for a while. At first we were thinking it was done with a "master key" or something, but he called Royal Truck Body and they said there is no such thing.

Re: Any Idea How Our Truck Got Broken Into?

I have no idea but I thought I would tell you what another plumber told me once. He said that practically any key will start a John Deere backhoe (at least at one time this may have been the case). I don't know if this is true or not but maybe it's possible that a lot of keys might work on your boxes. Their may not be a "master key" but maybe a thief doesn't need one if any old key will work.

P.S. I think "any old key" would mean any key that shared a common blank.

i know some of the boxes that they sell at lowes/depot have a number on the key and a number where you insert the key. So if you own key #3 and go into the store your key will unlock any of the same name brand with the #3. Basically you can walk around a parking lot looking for the same brand with the number 3. Needless to say I got different boxes.

My friend had a toyota which I could start with my storm door key.

Lock picking isn't that hard really and lock pick sets are available all over the internet.

It used to be the same thing with Caterpillar, one key fits all, the problem was getting the cover open to get to the key hole.

The switches were made by Indak. The keys were all the same and would start anything from a dozer to a riding lawnmower. I still have a few.

I'd replace the locks with a hasp and a good lock (s). Make them at least work for the freebies.

Re: Any Idea How Our Truck Got Broken Into?

What's another mystery is how they didn't get caught. Can you imagine how long it must have taken them to clean out every one of his bins, and how much noise it would've made? And there is a little lip in each one, so they'd have to be very careful to lift it up and over each time. Around $3,000 worth of stuff.

Plus we live on the main street of our neighborhood. There is traffic going down it pretty much all hours.

And I was up until about 3am that night working on something for my sons birthday party, then I got this spooked feeling like I was being watched. So I went to bed. Idiot! I didn't even check outside.

Re: Any Idea How Our Truck Got Broken Into?

There are two possibilities. One...your husband failed to lock the boxes. I realize he never does this, but he could have. The second is that they picked the locks. These locks are not that difficult to pick...in my opinion they are easier than doing door locks.

[QUOTE=Grumpy]My friend had a toyota which I could start with my storm door key.

That's funny because I had a f__ked up '87 toyota work truck that someone stole one night. It had nothing in it, not even a radio. I went and bought a new one and about a month later the cops called and said they found it. It was at a apartment complex about 30 blocks away from my house and it was in the exact same condition as when I left it. No damage to the locks, windows, nothing.

I couldn't figure out how they did it and more interestingly WHY? How many people who just need a ride somewhere nearby and don't want to walk (the only explanation I could think of) have master keys or know how to pick the locks on a beat up toyota work truck (if you're gonna learn how to pick the locks on something make it something cool like a bmw or a porshe) but now it makes sense. Guy must've had a storm door key!

Picked the locks, or used a set of keys. I have a chain with about 30 different small keys on it. With one I can start most construction equp. 'sizzor' lifts, boom lifts, bobcats, also many small locks such as tool boxes caps etc. Also there are ways to 'pop' things as well as just picking the lock.

Put a miniature Pit Bull in each box over night.

Re: Any Idea How Our Truck Got Broken Into?

I have a warner utility body, I asked my locksmith friend what kind of security I have, He laughed and said my locks are about the easiest to pick, and he recommended a keeper be mounted on both the fromt and the back of the body, and a drop in bar be used to keep the doors from rotating open.

So how ever it was done may not be as important as knowing that it can happen again, and an added measure is needed.

I could go in my toolbox and make a pick or rake system to open that lock box in about 5 minutes. Not really the safest locks out, just there to keep honest people honest. As stated above, get a hasp system for it.

Re: Any Idea How Our Truck Got Broken Into?

My truck just was broke into and apparently Royal truck bodies are being targeted by theives in orange county and maybe more areas. If you have a royal truck bodie and have a royal key slightly used it will open almost all of royal trucks doors. My boxes were all unlocked and when the sheriff came to write the report he stated he had seen this alot with royal service bodied trucks. He was taking the report and a neighbor contractor with the same body came up with his keys and opened up the boxes of another contractors truck. Seems we are easy pickins if you have these boxes. WATCH OUT IF YOU HAVE A ROYAL TRUCK BODY.

Sounds like an inside job...perhaps someone made a duplicate of the key...

Someone mentioned Home Depot boxes earlier in this (old) thread... I can open any Husky box sold through HD with one of these keys... And they put the number right on the front of the lock, so finding the right key is a snap.

(I worked for the manufacturer in a past life)
