Another Idea For Here - Mentoring

Ok ... some on here I think make very good use of the forum (me? eh, sometimes, sometimes not)

but some really come here to ask questions and learn. Some really use this as a legitimate educational tool for their business/trade

there's some members on here that (while nobody knows it all) --- have some REALLY good perspective on what they're doing and 9/10 times, they give good advice. I'm not going to name names - but I will say there are more than you think ...

and then there's guys coming that have a buttload of questions. You can tell that they're serious about their business and are just plain looking for advice.

the thing is ... there is so much SHOTGUNNED advice and unfocused questions (im as guilty for that as the next one)

So what if ... you matched the novices with the experienced for a week.

again, kind of a buddy system ---- but you get like a week with that buddy --- and on an IM/Chat type format --- you give/get advice/feedback

and then after a week - you get matched with another buddy

again, another idea - eat it, spit on it, laminate it on your wall, give it to your mother, send it to the President, claim it yours, in one ear out the other ---- -however you like ... it's just an idea

Re: Another Idea For Here - Mentoring

I think that is an outstanding idea Mr. Diggler!! did Burt give you that idea?

No seriously, I think it would be great. Really give people a chance to expand thier knowledge and maybe figure something's out on thier own just in conversation. I would jump on that.

However, I would not want to be on here all week expecting someone to be on to "chat" with, and never show up(not that I am not on here anyway, but coming from someone who may have a life outside of construction and is not a ContractorTalk.com 'groupie" like us). I believe it would be a good idea, and the feedback and benefits of it would be priceless, but more thought and organization will need to be sculpted for it to work.

Great idea though!!!!

I'd be happy to mentor Mike, he has shown considerable promise, just needs a little guidance here and there

Hey John,

I really like your new signature.

Mentoring is valuable for both participants.

Back in college, (computer programming before pc's), I finished 2 semesters worth of coding in about 1/2 of the first semester. The instructor needed an aid to tutor a deaf/mute student and I accepted the position. The questions invoked rought out issues I had previously never considered, yet, by being forced to review where this girl was coming from, I found it provided me with a much broader understanding of things that I went right past with little tricks. I learned as much from her questions as she did from my tutoring.

Same goes for this and other forums.

Ed, are you comparing Dirt to a deaf mute female?

Deaf maybe, but definitely not mute.

I'm not touching the gender aspect.

I'd be up for that, as long as we could do it in one of your local pubs over some pints!

Sounds good to me, I'm quite partial to real beer (top-fermented, not the lager that many Americans think of as beer), but my preference is for cider. If the mentoring goes really well, we could celebrate by sharing a bottle of vintage port, perhaps a Croft '75

Be careful Mike, after the beers John might take you out for tea and badminton! Just don't fondle his shuttlecock. Those British cabinet makers don't care for that.

Funny you should say that Ken, I'm only about 50 miles from Badminton, the place in Gloucestershire from which the modern game takes its name.
