Angie's List "Penalty Box"

I was looking at the Angie's List website for the first time, and I noticed the "penalty box" were Homeowners bad mouth contractors...WTF!?

It seems like anyone can say anything about your business and people will believe it, does this website offer a contractor rebuttal or something to get the other side?

And what happens when one homeowner gives a terrible review and another gives the same contractor an "A"? It just doesn't seem very useful.

I can't believe so many people actually PAY for this service...

Are any of you in the Penalty box? and if so heres your chance to explain...

During high school, I played junior hockey and still hold two league records: most time spent in the penalty box; and I was the only guy to ever take off his skate and try to stab somebody

Angie's list is a total crock, even though you get a chance to rebut a negative review the DAMAGE is already done no matter what. They basically condone liable and defamation of business owners because some one feels they had a less then exemplary experience.

Re: Angie's List "Penalty Box"

Contractors here are big on that thing, I had never heard of it until I moved here.
I worked for a paper contractor selling paint jobs and he was in the Angie's list...after I walked from their shoddy fly by night operation I assumed the list was tainted.

Hockey looks like fun.

750,000 home owners think is a good enough site to get info on us... how much do they charge the homeowner to join?

Re: Angie's List "Penalty Box"

Just got an email yesterday from Angie's. It said.

Homeowners!
Local contractors are offering 30% to 40% discounts because of the economy.
I don't know of anyone doing that.

Re: Angie's List "Penalty Box"

I consider Angies List to be as bad as the BBB....a paper tiger with no real dispute resolution capabilities whatsoever. My refusal to join the BBB is one of principal more than anything else and I freely tell potential clients that. All contractors (that they are aware exist) are on the BBB website and have a write up, it just shows them to be a non-member if you aren't a dues payer.

I have had two complaints in the past six years. Although they only report for the last 36 months, one of them still shows on my record. The first complaint was from a gentleman six years ago who was expecting the shingle delivery to arrive at approximately mid morning which is what we told him, which is what we were told. He called me ten times from 10:30 to 11:30 bitching and moning and I assured him after several calls to my supplier the shingles were on the truck. He filed a complaint online with the bBB at 11:30...shingles show up at noon, I make him call them back to recant and they inform him they cannot do that but will make a note that the contractor resolved the issue. What issue?

The second was a second tier HO on a FSBO house with fire damage. Dealt with both parties, but the 80 year old man wanted to control the money. He used to be a contractor, blah, blah, blah, and originally wanted me to do the entire resto of 100K and pay me at the end. I changed my complete payment schedule to suit him and against my better judgement took the job. Needless to say, had to pull off two months later for non payment, liens, the works. The second tier HO was the one caught in the middle and filed the complaint. I rebutted and won the debate, but the record still shows. Total BS and I refuse to support them with any of my hard earned money.

The only thing the BBB does for us is make us constantly defend ourselves.
