Angies List

2 years ago I answered the phone and it was for a kitchen lead, went out and saw the women and said I would do an estimate. She called before I was done with the estimate and asked me to add something. Here's the story. I told her I needed to find a pen, she says what kind of businessman doesn't have a pen at all times, found the pen and said let me get a piece of paper or my notepad, she says what the hell kind of business do you run if your notepad isn't right there. Well she had me on that one. I got a bad feeling about this and blew her off. Not the most professional thing to do, but thats what I did. Now after 2 years I have an F forever on Angies list, even though I never did work for this person. In 20 years of being a GC I have had complaints, all resolved and nothing ever went past talking it out and fixing the problem stage. Knock on wood. Rather than say I'm one of the good guys I'd rather ask are there any Angies list stories out there. Apparently once you get F'ed your F'ed forever.

Re: Angies List

This sounds bogus, how the hell do you qualify for an F if you haven't done anything? Im on job sites daily, call me and I don't have a pen and paper handy, does that give me an F.

Who is Angie's List, are they registered with anyone of importance (State or Federal)?

Sue for defimation of character. This is BS, 20 years working in the business and someone calls and your not ready at the snap of their fingers and you get an F? Before you get graded or 'charged' with anything shouldn't someone do some form of investigation?

Call them and complain. You've got nothing to lose. You didn't do any work for her, what right does she have to rate you? It sounds like you made the right choice blowing her off. She sounds like a nutcase.

Re: Angies List

I did call them, they are pretty popular with some homeowners around here. When I talked to Angie's List they told me the F stays, but to try and get a bunch of A's and people would pay less attention to the F. Then they asked me if I wanted to advertise with them . I am willing to go the distance to make a customer happy, I mean without them were not in business. And it has been 20 years without a serious complaint, just the usual stuff, took too long, don't like the wood grain, sub put a tire track on lawn, dust on furniture ect. You know things any of us could something about and do approve on. I got angry and wrote to Angies List and said keep your whiny I've been burned by poor service providers customers away from me and what they did is put this under my company name (Silvertree Construction does not perform work in any Angies List territories). That was immature of me, but I was upset. The kitchen customer made her contractors life hell I'm sure. But for me it's an F for eternity. They have me on their email list and snail mail list. I get a couple of invitations to join their advertising program every month.

Re: Angies List

Time to turn the tables and fight fire with fire.

Hire a 16 year old to build you a website for $200.00

I'm thinking a good domain name might be

WhyAngiesListIsBogus.com or maybe WhyAngiesListIsAPhoney.com or WhyAngiesListLiesToPeople.com

Put your experience on it and invite others to post thier bad experiences.

The truth is that anything that is large enough ends up with a percentage of negatives over time. You do enough business and sooner or later you run into some problems, Angies List is no different, I think you might be suprised how many others will post negative exerpiences with them.

Think of it as cyber picketing them.

See how they like that.

Re: Angies List

AngiesListSucks.com

There are many sites that start out that way when a major builder or insurance company has upset too many people already.

I recent reacquainted myself with www.AllStateSucks.com to find out some skinny on how they deal with their claims.

Ed

edit:

Whoops! Too late, its already taken and parked at 1 and 1

angieslistsucks.com
This domain name has just been registered.

Re: Angies List

Kevjob...

She sounds like the type that has the attitude 'If I can't get you one way, I will get you another'

Now it's time to turn the tables on her, bring in the manufacture's rep to review the paint and follow his suggestion, such as it's acceptable the way it is.

At this time I believe Angie's List needs some sort of regulations to follow, if they are taking peoples words at face value and just posting negetivity without any form of investigation then they are just as guilty as the habitual complainer. Their inactions caused by their actions means they have some form of liability.

Re: Angies List

I find it iteresting that the registrant for www.angieslistsucks.com

is a representative from angieslist themselves.

Good job of heading things off at the pass.

Do you think they were expecting someone to set up a complaint site against them?

Re: Angies List

Hardball and defamation of character. The problem is time and money. Another contractor I met, although I don't know him well does about 4 million a year in business. He is a decent guy, NARI member and certified, from what I hear he runs a clean business. He got an F from AL also, I am good friends with one of his salespeople. This contractor did something similar to me, he called and was told to respond to the complaint. The problem is I could be a member of Angies and say that a fence I contracted from Fences of Distinction was cottonwood and not cedar as was quoted, I can also say the fence company took too long and did not fill the post holes with crushed rock as was stated in my contract.
Now my fence contractor replies that I'm wrong and it is cedar and the proper fill was used when setting the posts and the reason it took longer was we ran into shale 12 inches down. The fence companies rebuttal will be posted right under my baseless claim. Still an F. But the fence company got to respond. Now you look at this fence companies listing and do you even understand that they have correctly responded to this slander? Probably not, what you see is an F. It's a crummy system and some bad contractors get sorted out and some good contractors get the shaft.

Re: Angies List

This whole Angie's list thing just sounds like a scam to get people to send them a monthly check.

Probably makes the HO feel good to see that someone listened to them. So,if there is no contact with the contractor to justify the complaint, then they should be sued for slander.

What's next?
A site for people to complain about someone looking at them funny?

Just a bunch of crybabies finally getting some attention, and paying someone to listen.

Re: Angies List

This whole concept P's me off!!

Why do people have to rely on a Web Site like AL to help them make their decisions?
What ever happened to common sense.Too many people use the web for their one way ticket to fame or profit. How does anyone know what to believe anymore?Anyone can get a web site and make claims they can't substantiate? Who's to know?
This is where common sense goes out the door and people believe because it is in writing,it must be true.
Common sense would be to talk to other people that have had a personal experience and not second hand information from companies trying to profit. That in itself is bias.

The complaints posted on this kind of web site, could be from someone that nobody could make happy. Some people just like to complain.
How's a prospective client going to know all the circumstances behind the problem.

In thirty years I've had one complaint logged against me with the BBB.
The HO just couldn't be pleased.I spent hours trying to find a leak in a roof another contractor applied.I never charged him for the time until I found the leak and repaired it.Then I only charged him for the repair.
After doing numerous other projects for him ,he was happy.
Then he had me install a window that I told him wasn't right for the application. He insisted and I put it in.A year later, when he had problems with it,I tried to repair it to no avail.
So,what does he do?Reports me to BBB.
No phone call from him, just a notice from them.

Fact is some people are too hard to please and they are probably the most likely to file a complaint.

Re: Angies List

I did one job for angies list people and it was a major pain in the ass. I had to work 3 times as hard to please them. They ended up giving me an "A" but after that I've avoided most leads that come from them.

These people wanted a skylight and they knew exactly where they wanted it and what they wanted. It had some issues so we called them, had the wife come up on the roof to see the issues (a nasty old chimney in the direct view) but they were sure, so we put it where they wanted.

After it's in and done, about a month later (after all their friends said bad things about the view of the chimney) they emailed me and demanded that I move it and patch their roof and ceiling at my expense .

They said they didn't realize what it was gonna be like and as a pro I should have shown them this problem. I said I did and that's what you chose. We'll move it and patch it for you but at your expense.

Haven't heard back from them, maybe now my A is an F. I don't give a S__T.
