An Amazing "stone Mason"

That would be a really big understatement to call this guy a stone mason. Lew French is his name, some of you stone masons probably know who he is. I never heard of him, but obviously, the rich folk on Martha's Vineyard have. Stunning stone work. Watch the video, I hope his son carries on the tradition because there's not many thoroughly talented people like this in the world anymore.

My hat's off to him

That video makes me realize how much I "could" put into my work. That guy really does a job, but it sounds like he gets paid for it too.!!

Awesome!! I know how hard it is to drystack. It takes exceptional patience to do it. This guy does great work. If I wasnt married or have a child, I would fly out there and beg him to let me work with him. A very rare talent indeed.

But imagine how you'd feel at the end of the day, having to hear it from him all day long.

Re: An Amazing "stone Mason"

I really dont see what the big deal is. The craftmanship is awsome, but not practical in any way. Given the time I'm sure most stone masons could do those jobs.

when someone has money to burn, it never is practical.

I think what is surprising is that he somehow found the way to work like this. If a stone mason here could work like this, then why wouldn't you want to try? I think there's way more to it than "most stone masons could do that with the time"

Re: An Amazing "stone Mason"

Most stone masons would do the smart thing and beat upon the rocks to make them fit. You can replicate that work at a 100th of the cost by not being so purist that you have to spend months searching for the perfect rock to fill a gap.

I firmly believe that every rock has it's place, but sometimes they need a little rockhammer convincing of what their place is.

Regardless, it is lovely work, and if he can find suckers to pay him for his eccentricities, more power to him.

Re: An Amazing "stone Mason"

Work looks good, anybody with the right amount of time could do that (not impressed at all) plus, who is he stroking to get that national press release? Probably butt slappin with some of those Marthas Vinyard wierdos. His son will get tired of that crap soon and pop a cap in his ass.

Re: An Amazing "stone Mason"

Why knock a guy that does good work, gets his price, is recognized and happy doing what he wants? He knows what he is doing.

That is far more than than many wanna-bees can show. - He is happy with his price, projects, waiting list and lack of jobs and collections.

The son has the choice to what he wants as he learns a trade.

I definitely appreciate this mans talent, the part that I'm having trouble understanding is, if he furnishes the materials by collecting mother natures bounty, I can only assume that every waking moment of his life that isn't spent working, sleeping or on the can is otherwise spent collecting, sorting and transporting rocks

I hear that. And he's going to end up getting stoned to death by his son.

But still, that type of artistry can't be taught. It does make you wonder where you could go with your talents if you were given free reign. I will never take rocks for granted again! Next time I'm digging piers and I hit a rock, I will remeber Lew.

Not sure about that, watch the video again and look at all of the pallets of rocks on the jobsite. The green people would have a cow if he took all of the island's rocks. Block Island is the same way, beaches full of nice round rocks....try to leave with a couple of them.
