Aluminum Coil On Pressure Treated
With the problem of corrosion when aluminum comes in contact with pressure treated lumber, how is anyone handling trying to isolate the two so there is no problem.
I've heard some say that by wrapping the PT with a building wrap will solve this problem. Since the aluminum is usually fastened with stainless pin nails will this be a cause of concern.Won't there be "bleeding" through the penetration? |

Re: Aluminum Coil On Pressure Treated
In the past I've used housewrap and also the manufacturer says you could also apply a good paint to the wood I've done both and no problems as of yet. I use stainless steel painted trim nails to attach my aluminum.

I have not used it yet but the vinyl coil is safe on PT.

Re: Aluminum Coil On Pressure Treated
http://www.alumapole.com/pt_catalog.asp looks like they are having issues with their site.
http://www.contractortalk.com/f33/aluminum-coil-stock-12057/#post123211 when I searched for PRO TRIM I found this thread. I have seen the Pro Trim breaks and their coil at the JLC shows. The guys there bend it at the speed of light, however most people complain about it being a little harder to bend. If you end up using it please post your results.

Re: Aluminum Coil On Pressure Treated
Doug, Straight Vinyl/PVC Coil, well... SUCKS. If you bend a 90, and place it on a table, it will be a 120 in about 1 minute.
PVC coated Aluminum coil on the other hand keeps it shape, but I also dislike it because it has that ugly wood grain on it. It also has a tendency to attract all the pollen dust, and to me just looks like crap. High end Alcoa aluminum coil is the ONLY way to go IMO. Wrap PT with tyvek, or tar paper. I have on my own house wrapped some new PT WITHOUT a barrier with aluminum and have yet to see any breakdown after two years |

Re: Aluminum Coil On Pressure Treated
Look at the stickers on the end of your lumber. Turns out we were already getting Micro Pro, before we'd ever heard of it. You can treat this stuff just like the old CCA. Look on the Osmose web site.
The same stuff is made under another name too, but it escapes me...maybe after I sleep

Re: Aluminum Coil On Pressure Treated
I usual use Grace Vycor Flashing tape. Works very well and creates the waterproof seal.

Re: Aluminum Coil On Pressure Treated
Dave, we use the Alcoa TS24, it costs us $79.40/roll, but when we buy it by the pallet we can negotiate a better deal. You have to look carefully though, because other suppliers in the area always send me fliers that say "Alcoa Coil $55/roll" If you go there and look at the box it has a different UPC code on it, because it is very slightly thinner and has fewer coats of paint on it. Its the same reason why the Coil from home depot scratches just from putting it in the brake. So my advice is to use the "good stuff" and apply your trim in such a way so that you don't have to caulk, and you will have a trim that will stay nice and bright. Also just a hint Krylon, "white" spray paint IS the exact match if you make a small scratch everything else shows up gray.

Re: Aluminum Coil On Pressure Treated
Yup Patrick, thats the same coil I always get nothing beats it and I'm able to get nearly every color from my supplier. I like the krylon trick I'm deffinetly gonna pick some up.

Re: Aluminum Coil On Pressure Treated
if you guys want a good solution for small scratches in PVC trim coil only.
Brake Cleaner in an Aerosol can. spray some on a rag or paper towel and it wipes your scratch right away. don't use it on the non pvc trim coil though, it causes it to thin too much and might take off too much paint. on the pvc, it kinda micro melts the paint into the scratch. i always use the premium alcoa coil, never the cheap crap. |

Re: Aluminum Coil On Pressure Treated
Flexible Rubber Water Proof Membrane is what I use at all connection points. Stainless steels screws, bolts, etc.. I do not use galvanized anymore. I upsell the client on the fact that the deck will be around longer. I also bring a sample of what happens to wood with galvanized and with stainless. It is a big selling point when they see it.
