-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I've been in the construction field for over 22 years, Ive done it all, always for someone else. Ive started my own biz 1 year and a half ago, started with nothing. i do have about 10 grand worth of tools now.I do Home Improvements I do it all. but my question is would it be better for me to concentrate on one field or still do it all.It seems to me im not getting anywhere, I still drive around in my beatup pickup. Or does it take 5 years to really get established. I do good work never had any complants i have repeat customers and they all love my work. Im frustrated anf ready to give up here. It seems to me its hard to start a biz with nothing and no help.Heres my website you all let me know what you think of my work. www.tmfhomeimprovements.com |

Re: Advise
The site looks good.
Ya might be selling your self short $$$$, it's a common problem with fresh fellas. A lot of my high school buddies did the one trade thing. It seems to work, however in this biz I think it's better to be pretty fluid. Bob

Re: Advise
TMF, I've done it all too. Just within the last year I started my own business and it has taken off really well. I decided to try to stick to one area of expertise but if I need the money then I will do what it takes. As an example work slowed down last month so I had to help out an ex-boss to be able to pay the bills. I've been staining and finishing trim then installed all the trim. Built closet shelves and now am finishing up an oak staircase. Hang in there and eventually you will find your niche.

Re: Advise
Don't get discouraged just yet. It sounds to me like you are actually doing much better than you think. In just a year and a half, you have obviously established a positive reputation, (proven by not only satisfied customers but repeat customers too), you started with nothing and now have 10 grand in tools (hopefully all paid for by business profits?),and you have made a web presence to further get your name out. If you've accomplished all that and are not deep in the red, I say stick with what's obviously working.
Find out where your leads are coming from..word of mouth, advertising etc. If you feel your not getting enough leads, expand your marketing. If you have concerns that being a "does it all" kind of company is harming your reputation with customers, represent yourself as having a seperate division for each of the services you offer all under one company name and see if it brings in better results than your current method. Hang in there, Rome wasn't built in a day.
