Advice

Advice !! I know i made the right call on this, I got a referal from a GC for roughing in a bathroom in an existing building, it sets back from the main house, its going to be used G class ,I went out to give an estimate to the home owner and size up the job, for what ever reason i asked if the septic tank was inspected when it was installed, they replyed NO!! I told them i need to pull a permit to do my work !! and told them it may cause them a problem if the inspector checks to see if the tank had a permit for it when it was installed ,they said do you have to pull a permit ??I said yes if you want me to do the work, I also told them it might come back to bite them when they go to sell the property!! I guess my question is this, the job was way out in the country about 20 miles out of sight, would anyone here do the same as i did ?? I just opened my shop about 2 months ago and business is slow going right now ,but still trying to build it up but not at the expence of doing a job without a permit. Thanks in advance!!

Try to send these jobs overseas!!

Re: Advice

Under all the criteria you listed in your post I probably would have done it in my younger years, but don't tell anyone I said so, I'de probably deny it. You're right It'll probably come back to haunt them when they go to sell the house.

Re: Advice

You did the right thing. If they would have been pinched later on they could have pointed the finger at you. Then the inspectors/village think you are an arse and they make it hard on you in the future. I think you made the honest call. You know the saying, "Watch out for #1 and don't step in #2."

Re: Advice

Even if the job was next door to my office... if I have to do it right I have to do it right. That means if a permit is required I will have to pull it if they want me to do the work.

Re: Advice

Some areas don't even have an inspection process. I would have worded my contract 'Customer responsible for permits', then kept my copy handy. I think as long as your work falls inside of code, why's uncle sam gota stick his fingers in, save him a drive. The whole stinking thing's all politics anyway........OK....at least 70%.........would ya believe 50?
