Absestos ( What Year? )

What year was asbestos banned for popcorn ceilings and blown insulation? Before 1977, I hope.

While she wasn't sure on an exact year ecspecially in fla. She said its totaly possible you have asbesto there. Take a small sample if you can.

Re: Absestos ( What Year? )

Too late. Son and I was doing some work on his house he recently bought. Moved a wall beside a stairwell about a the with of the wall, and had to remove some ceiling drywall with popcorn on it. The insulation was dark blown stuff. I expressed concern about the cloud of fibers in the air and the family being there. Had us coughing. I'm thinking he said the house was built in '77.

I can't give you a date, but I do have a friend that was spraying asbestos ceilings into the '80s

We used asbestos in the early 80's. A good friend of mine, HVAC contractor, died of asbestosis just a year ago.

Re: Absestos ( What Year? )

I'm thinking most of the particles I saw were wool insulation. The thing I was more concerned about was the little bit drywall with popcorn that we had to replace and son and his family. My lungs are prob so coated in nicotine, asbestoes has little chance of penetrating. Actually, I think I had two uncles with asbestosis. Not a good way to go. I figure in 20 years there is a good chance something else will take me.

Did some reading on this yesterday and found that it was primarily used (everywhere) between 1970-1975. Main manufacturer was Canada, then two other's (africa or something?).

Re: Absestos ( What Year? )

There is a little town in south east Quebec called Asbestos. My in laws worked the mines for many years up until the late 70's. I think they still mine it for automotive applications but on a much smaller scale than they used to. Many people who lived and worked in that town died of cancer including my father in law. Was it from inhaling asbestos all those years? My gut feeling says yes.
