I did design and build my own site. Hostsnake just hosts it. I haven't bought my own domain yet because pegasusdesigns is already taken and I haven't decided what domain to buy.

Gotchya.
Well, don't let anybody know what you want.
Use notepad to make a list of possibilities. Up to 500. When you're ready, at the registrar's site, hover or click domains and select 'bulk registration'. Select the evtension(s) you want. C & P your list into the box and enter the code #'s. It only takes a few seconds to know which ones are available so you can narrow your search.

I am Happy to Share the Knowledge with Everyone here.
As Gold as that is, it is only a Starting point. There is plenty of work to do after testing the grade of a site.
It is really nice to be able to look at other sites in the same field / category and get ideas on what we can do to make changes for the better ratings overall.
Believe it or Not, there are some sites that Rated a "1" on the "100" scale.
That Can't be a Good Thing.
Still Working on It myself.

Online tools that claim to boost your SEO won't do much but aggrivate google. If google's search algorithm detects the tell tale signs that the site has been SEO'd it will more than likely hurt your search engine rank placement.
Here's an article straight from the horses mouth on SEO: http://www.google.com/webmasters/seo.html

the internet is already way past the point of taking over, compared to the phone book, as far as a reference point for searching for contact information.
The other day I looked up a chinese restaraunt and I was using a phone book from 1998! Shows how much I keep updated with that reference material.

you need a web site, people are on the internet searching all the time for things, The phone book is a waste of money unless your on the front or back cover.Having a web site is a small look into your company and it looks professional.

Even ir you're going to have somebody design and build your site, you need to register your own dot.com.
Then you keep the dotcom info private, but let the developer only have a seterate access to the ftp of your site for working purposes. If hsnake regged your name, it's theirs, not yours.
Hopefully, you can get a name yourself.

We'll see if that helps

yo,
check out my site www.losantivillemarylandplumbersonwestbranchroad.r oadmont.us.rr.com
I also own the .net domain as well. I wanted to make sure my competition didn't take my powerful ability to make money by sidestepping me on the down low.
what's funny is people come up with these long.looooong domain names thinking people are going to type it in. Trust me, unless there's a free meal ticket to a local eatery on your site, good luck. Your blessing chance is going to be linked up somewhere that grabs the content of the product you offer.
Reality on the internet?
For every well-done website on the internet, there's 4000 of them that look like my grandma with parkinsons was the keyboard commando. I randomly send emails to websites that are so pitiful that I tell them, step away from the keyboard
we know your broke because it shows
you're too cheap to pay a professional so your brother's aunt sister in law told everyone at bingo on thursday night that she builds websites for free, free! hear that? hold on whistle break
If you're going to make an effort, spend more than the cost of a domain to promote your product. If there was internet police and bad websites were a crime, they'd be enough work for contractors for a lifetime to build the jails.
The ones who know they spent money and put up an effort, congrats. I'd be running scared from a contractor that has a deplorable website.
It's better to have no website at all than a website that looks like sesame street built. These smilies reduce my mood medicine intake. COOL!

Ummm...your well done website is down there AJ....or at least the link you posted is no good
Here is what the cost of the domain name, a few bucks a month and some of my time got me spyderhoesolutions.ca
Going to do one for my bro in law next...for free
Edit: Read the post again. Not a real link, just posted it to make your point?

Thanks
great info spectatorz thanks alot. An approach when using search engines is to list your site on local search engine s and directories for smaller bsuiness's which lowers your advertising costs (as just local) and also reaches your target market far more effectively e.g craigs list or city search are two such sites

I just checked mine out, thanks Spectatorz! Great link, that info will help me out a lot.
I scored 37 out of 100, my Google page rank is 2 and my traffic rank is in the top 14%
The traffic rank really surprised me, that's awesome. I knew I get lots of visitors but had no idea I was doing that well.
