Post The Key Man

Jack spends as much time behind the wheel of his pickup each day, as he does at the jobsite. Spreading his time between two projects, Jack spends all of his time fighting fires and running from place to place. His being overstretched winds up slowing down his crews, increasing mistakes and rework, and costing him money. At the same time, his clients feel left out. He's harder to get in touch with, and they often have to wait to get questions answered or issues resolved.

Try to Grow Your Own

Good article, I especially agree with the high value a construction supervisor can add to the project and to a firm. I've had success helping young guys with drive and decent people skills to become great supervisors and assets to the firm.

Yes, you have to pay for their mistakes, but with good guys it's a good investment and the loyalty tends to follow if you gave them the initial break. Too many owners see some promise in a new supervisor, get some early decent results then totally forget about training. You must continue to watch for opportunities to provide effective training for your construction supervisors, even the ones with more experience.

The large variation of customer satisfaction and profitability that a comes from an excellent construction supervisor warrants the effort in training. My web site below offers lots of free resources. I've never found any decent books on the subject, though I've reviewed most that have been published.

training.

Training your lead man to do as you do, with the frame of mind that he will be responsible for this job, is key. Let them take on some responsibility from time to time until they feel comfortable with it. And now go find the next job, knowing progress is being made.
