Victorian Porch Rebuild
The house is circa: 1860's.
This was a project from last winter. The porch was in bad shape. The floor had rotted and the balustrade fell off. The columns were sinking into what was left of the floor and the steps were built by a moron... You know, the 9" rise with 6" tread. The HO was insisting we kept the original posts so something was original. The spindles, railing and newel posts are all cedar and were ordered on the net. Pricey, pricey... The lower rail was chamfered into an upside down "V" shape and we had to set up a jig to cut all the spindles to fit. The stairs rails were nerve racking. The flooring and treads are 4" t&g mahogany. I made a bullnose that ran around the entire deck and the treads are glued and battened together with a routered bullnose. The post bases are made from cedar with a simple quarter round trim in the joints and a bed molding around the top to make a cap. The HO was pre-painting the parts in the basement and staining the mahogany (Cetol) before we put it together. His wife was putting up Christmas decorations before we finished...the woman loves the holidays. ![]() The vinyl lattice underneath was not my idea but, the budget was running out by then. Hopefully I'll get a call back to remedy that.If I find the other pictures of the house I'll post them. It's a beautiful house. Last edited by Geoff MRT; 04-11-2008 at 11:07 PM. Re: Victorian Porch Rebuild
The few boards that were left over were made into a floor in the cockpit of my little sloop. It's not teak but, my boat isn't a Beneteau either...
