What products are you using? What was the previous finish?

Re: Library Refinish

existing finish was thin coat of poly - oak was light colored.

tried to sand and overglaze to get it to this color, but that didn't work.
so we scrubbed the wood surface with solvents using metal bristle toothbrushes. That opened up the grain and allowed the stain to set in.

We created the stain using Japan colors, mineral spirits and a bit of BLO and applied by roller and brush, and wiped by rag.

Sealed by spraying shellac (sealcoat) scuff sanded.

Sprayed tint/stain/tone color to even out where necessary.

topcoated with two coats Ilva 2K

cases done on location shelves in shop.

Re: Library Refinish

I'd be scared to put 2K over shellac. Is this something you have done before? My 2K has an isolation sealer, I would have used that instead of the shellac.

Leo:
I've used the isolante, and I've used sealcoat.
I prefer sealcoat, and have never had a problem with it.

Re: Library Refinish

The Isolante' saved my butt on a big Babinga countertop. Personally I always try to stay within the system. Otherwise warranty issues will be rejected. Not that they are really doing you any favors, all they do is replace the product, no compensation for the labor.
