Back Links

I just used the Websitegrader and I have less back links than I did two weeks ago.
Does anyone know why I would have less links?

Re: Back Links

I depends on what tool is being used. Google admits they won't show you all your backlinks.
Here is a great tool for finding backlinks to you.
http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/

If some did drop off the link to you got changed, deleted or the site linking has changed or moved, or if it linked to a page in your site that no longer exists it will drop off.

Leonard and Upscale are now SqirrelNMoose. Upscale sold Koi and pond materials and will be shutting down. Len worked for Upscale and now is 100% SEO and website building.
Yes, I would not hesitate to recommend him.
I was just yankin his chain a bit with the SqirrelNMoose jab.

Maybe Rocky needs help from Natasha to store his nuts, with Bullwinkle out of the picture?

Let's just get rid of them all.

Re: Back Links

Theres many reasons why you might have less backlinks

Perhaps one of the websites linking to you lost page rank and no longer counts as a good backlink

If one of your backlinks was from a blog post, perhaps the post got deleted from the blog.

To add more back links, first and foremost, add content to your website that visitors will find useful and will make them want to return to often.

Once a week go on the hunt for directories and websites related to your line of business that might link to yours.

Hope this helps

Re: Back Links

I am working on getting more back links, so my friend who did my website added a link directory to my site. There is not a link on the front page yet, in fact there are few changes on the site that are not fully operational yet.

However,

If you would like to trade links go to my site housepaintinglouisville and add /link_directory at the end in the navigation bar.

My site is doing fairly well on several different key word searches for painting in Louisville. I have done a lot of back links on link directories over the past year and half.

I hold very little stock in any of the free "website audit" software that's out there.

Don't get me wrong, they are great for finding broken links/images and other technical issues with a website but not really a good tool to use for your SEO (especially if you're in a competitive market). You're up against marketers who are using better, more accurate tools to check up on JUST backlinks.

I personally use a little piece of software called SEOElite to check the number of relevant backlinks to a website. You can also use the software to scan your competitor sites to see who exactly is linking to them, along with anchor text, IP address, Page Rank, Page Title and the WEIGHT of the link... Some backlinks are far more valuable then others.

A link from a directory of some sort for example is easy to obtain but because it's a "directory of websites" the link will carry very little weight.

A link from a similar contractors website in another service area, on a page of their site that has very few other outgoing links on it would obviously carry much more importance.

Your goal is to aquire the "valuable" links as they will propel the site through rankings and help you hold them for a longer period of time.

SEO is not really all that technical... It's really just a lot of leg work and time.

Re: Back Links

To Carl,

It is so funny, but most people posting in this thread, after talking about various aspects of SEO in many threads on CT, these people don't have a links page / directory of any kind on their websites... (Check it for yourself)

to all,

Guys, I'm not making a distinction here as to who is an SEO guru and who is not, but if you pretend to be one, at least do things that seo gurus do...

I think it to be a waste of my to to further participate in any sort of SEO related threads (past this post), because all my attempts to organize the CT community to form a strong "SEO group" sort of thing was ignored by predominant majority of active participants in SEO threads...

I just had to get this out of my systems, because I see so much useless talk by people that know nothing or very little about web marketing and pretend to know everything.

Good luck to you all. I'll see you in roofing forum.

I think you're being a little harsh. This is the nature of forums. Most here are well intentioned.

I'm trying to learn enough about SEO to hire a guru. It's kind of tricky but I'm learning. It helps to keep a sense of humor in regards to some posts. I'm more judgemental with folks that make their living providing SEO services than I am with contractors giving it a try.

You seem to know what you are doing in regards to SEO. There's a couple of things that I question, but whaddaIknow.

If you want to collaborate with others, do things like answering other peoples SEO questions and try to refrain from calling them all stupid.

Re: Back Links

If you have 1 backlink or 1 million, who cares? If you checked today and had 50 and tomorrow you had 49, are you going to take the effort to hunt down where you are missing a link? Why?
If you need to publish your own links that point back to your website, than those links aren't really holding much weight on any search engine marketing factors. Websites that naturally aquire links because what they have on their site gets people to tell others are the websites which links are a positive factor in search engine results.
If you are having to post links to your own website on different sites throughout the web, then you are doing something wrong, and you need to go back to the drawing board on developing content for your website.
What is the benefit of having a link in a long, exhaustive list of miscelaneous websites anyhow?
Rather than hunting down directories where you can spam a link to your site, you may want to find sites that are related to your website and that a link to your site may serve of some value there. Find out who the webmaster is and contact them. Let them know the particular page on your domain that they can reference that adds some additional benefit to a particular area of their site.
Or if you can create content on your site that is interesting and useful, people will tell other people about it.

Is Nathan on other contractor forums posting messages with a link back to this forum in his signature with the anchor text: "contractor forum"?
No. Other people see this site as a valuable resource because of all the content held inside of it. And they are inclined to link to this site because they see that value. And everyone that is a member here adds to the value of that content. With that said, everyone here that has a website has the potential to create value in their own site content.
Even if you don't have the programming skills to develop a tool on your site that calculates the square footage of an area and how much tile is needed for a particular type of installation. You can still have the ability to write an article within your site as a Guide to Selecting Tile and Planning for a Bathroom Remodel.

Re: Back Links

Google has this great new invention called web master tools, IMO spending 5 minutes setting up an account is worth the effort. They will show you your back links since you have to prove to them that you actually own your site or are smart enough to hack the tracking code into the site's code. Unlike Yahoo, Google does not show the whole world all of your links and there's a good reason for it :-)

BTW, Google's webmaster's tools is not a new invention
