Wood Flooring Cleat Nailer Vs. Stapler

I have some wood flooring (3/4" solid oak) to install and I am considering purchasing one of the Grizzley flooring tools (cleat nailer or stapler) rather than a rental. I was just looking for some opinions / advice on the different fasteners. Thanks,Joe

One distinct advantage to a stapler is the availability of the staples. Every box store carrys them.

They carry very limited, if any of the cleats. Depending on the brand of the gun you may have to order them.

I have three Bostich staplers and one Porter Cable cleat gun. I use the cleats for bamboo or some of the harder exotics. It just seems to me the cleats split the tongues less.

Ive tore up jobs with both, they both came up hard.

I do the same as you Mike, staples for most stuff and cleats for Bamboo and exotics, for the same reason. I do think staples hold better though. I'd rather takeup a stapled job though.....at least the fasteners come up with the wood instead of having to go back and pull every last damned cleat

My favorite gun is my Bostich MIII. I have tried a few of the cheap knock offs and they suck. To the op: I would buy a good gun. They are worth the extra money and if you ever want to sell it the resale value will be there unlike a knock off that you will be lucky to get $100 for.

Theres no question staples hold better than cleats. Anyone who has ripped up a floor knows that staples are much more difficult to take up.

Here, Here!!!

We have a winner!!

I can kick cleated boards up after you get going, but staple will make blisters on your hands.

There are usually a few staples that stick, with part of the tongue lodged in there.
