Wood Choice

Okay Gentlemen I need some artistic assistance here. The HO is letting me pick and choose some light colored wood to trim out these others. She wants 3 feet of purple heart in the middle of the room and stretching the length of the room in a large rectangle. A lighter wood trimming that out followed by Ipe and then Brazilian Cherry. She does not want Oak anywhere in the room. I need something light enough to contrast with all these dark hardwoods. There will also be a swath of Tiger wood near the walls and a few 8 inch inlays scattered about. I told her that it was way to much for the room but she insists on this combo.

I’ve already completed a Santos mahogany with rustic/mountain grade birdseye maple in the bedroom and hallway but have run out of my source for the birdseye. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve thought of ash as a last resort but I’d hate to throw down a regular wood with all of these exotics. Softwoods are out of the question.

I don't do engineered so that is not an option either. Price is not an issue as she throws money around like she was gonna' die soon and is making sure her kids get nothing.

wow man .. that's quite a range of wood..especially the purpleheart.. thats what kinda of does everything in....I mean you can try looking at nara or gonca alves ..or lacewood(although its a bit light)
ya know I dont think a quality ash is a bad idea to balance out all that craziness..Thats all I have right now at the top of my head

Re: Wood Choice

So, I bring the HO a selection of light colored woods to choose from. She stops by while I'm unloading my truck and sees a piece of this:

She now wants a room (den/study) done like this.
Looking thru my assotment of planks, she points to one and says: "I like that one." I inform her that she stated she did not want oak. She then says that that, the wood she was pointing at isn't oak. I tell her it is. It is red oak. She wants that.

This is the downside of working for the better half. She (the boss) does business for 99.99% women. They change their minds like you wouldn't believe and they like to question me on every choice I make. Then they argue, disagree, 'suggest' other ways of doing things and finally do it my way. I think they do it on purpose.

A totally random lay. I've never seen it done but have enought to do a 50K ft. house. Light colored hardwoods are difficult. Let me get back to you, I'm not hitting on all cylinders right now.

My wife, her mother and two dear friends are all in the hospital and the taxes aren't done.

I'll check with my old buddies in Indonesia and China, maybe by monday.

That picture is from the hallway of the owner of my wood source. You try to walk it and you feel drunk. His home SHOULD be a showroom for all the ideas and things he has done to it. His front door is a solid piece of Ipe, hand chiseled and...

If you call them they can assemble the wood needed to achieve that floor. They have had 12 customers order it so far. Different strokes, different folks....
