You can bet your ass that northern red oak felled in Canada will be an awful lot harder than white oak felled in Alabama.
Fun Fact!

If you cut a short piece of red oak,
put one end in water and blow,
you get bubbles!

More useless trivia.

Re: White Oak/ Red Oak Difference

One of my woodworking instructors taught me this a long time ago. "It's all about the medullary rays". No need to sand or drill or split, just look at the surface-finished or unfinished, stained or not, it doesn't matter. I'm not going to get into the anatomy of a tree and exactly what a medullary ray is, but when you look at the surface you will see hundreds of little "lines" about 1/16" wide and either 5/8" or longer (up to about 1"-1 1/4"), or all less than 5/8". The white oak has the long rays and the red oak has the short ones. Period.

Re: White Oak/ Red Oak Difference

If any of you like white oak , better stock inventory, as it looks like it is going the way of the American elm tree.I have already lost one of my 4 precious 250+ year old white oak trees to this relatively new disease(at least in the residential setting) oak wilt

http://www.na.fs.fed.us/SPFO/pubs/fi...lt/oakwilt.htm

I live in the so called historic oak hill district of Hagerstown ,Md .and already in this area we have lost 5 or 6 of these huge trees. It is sad but apparently as with the elm, there is little in way of control.
