What a day....so far..

I had an estimate at 8:00 this morning...customer is a no-show...Estimate at 9:00..another no-show...Third estimate they tell me they have a bid for 2-1/4 red oak strip installed, sand and finish for $4 a ft.That leaves you with less than $2 a ft. to lay and finish...I wish them luck and tell them to beware..What a SH***y day!!!..vent over...

Me and all three of my local contractor buddies had worked lined up through june. ALL of our work just disappeared. Financing dried up, or dog got injured, or retirment plans changed etc...

This wasn't all on the same job mind you. All of our various project evaporated.

Just purchased a bunch of inventory from a tile setter, who just went out of business. You wouldn't believe the amount of local competitor's going out of business right now.

It's funny how "we" always get the bad wrap for no-shows. Apparently, it is ok if the HO is a no show, or late, or reschedules. No problem, but if you do it, you are flaky.

I know not everyone can operate this way, but I don't do estimates unless they are an existing customer or I am on-site for something else.

My business is different though, I feel bad for all that have to do the competitive bid deal. It is tough to keep positive but you have to.

Word.

My estimates are free....for the first one. If they are a no call/no show, I will gladly schedule a second one for a small fee. If they balk at that, then they obviously don't value my time, and probably wouldn't want to pay my price for the work anyways.

Did 80 yards stretch-in today in 4 hours. First work I've had in 2 weeks.

I always call the afternoon or evening before the day I'm to be there to confirm, there has not been a change in plans, or absent mind.

Lately I've been thinking about all the ho's who think to themselves "oh those tradesman are really hurting right now lets get em to work for nothing". Makes me think the next time the boom comes round I won't play so nice and be 'one of those contractors'.

I can beat that..

Builder ive been working for for 3 years took a 2000 sf job away from us..

got a guy tosupply, install and finish 31/3 #1 red oak, even made border in DR with Maple and walnut inlay, installed all stair nosings and step finish for 3.40 sf
funny thing is guy owes me 4000 since January.. my money was already in this house and I let him know that..

he gave me 1500 the other day...now not only did i not do this job after years of loyal service, i became his bank.(already was for years, but just the principle of it now)
