MattCoops, That is a pretty good script you've laid out.

Anthony, If you aren't able to get the name, address and phone number it should be real obvious that this is not your customer and stop wasting your time. Shake it off, walk it out, do whatever but move on to your real customers.

You can't please everybody and you won't sell them all. Concentrate on the ones you do sell and make them say WOW! Let the lowballers have the rest.

Good Luck
Dave

Stop me if I'm wrong. How do you suggest the consumer get the material and then hire a third party installer?
Simple: Referrals-Referrals-Referrals. Once an installer figures out the business end of the trade and has become accomplished at his trade then people will call the installer directly. The installer then can recommend places to purchase from and he can do the rest. Just got to lay out the script for the prospective consumer as the hows, costs and whens.

There is NO educating a customer if they are refusing to:
Give name, phone number and address.
Listen beyond the initial price quote.
Understand this is getting to be industry standard in my area.

Flooring contractors simply will not install carpet that has been purchased elsewhere. I offer this service simply because no one else will.

I will be the first to admit, As a local contractor, I can't compete with GCO, Lowes, HD, The Flooring Center, or any of the national suppliers when it comes to carpet purchasing of installation services. I do however offer the services they don't.

At least I am the only bath and kitchen remodeler in a 50 mile radius!!!
I'll stick with that and let the crazy big box installers lose money on carpet!
So just play the same game as Lowes.
Tell the HO that you can do it for the same price as lowes, under the same terms and show her Lowes terms. Then you add the cost of tack, pad, moving furniture, dumping, just as lowes is doing and you will end up with the job.

If not of course the customer will go with the lower install prices when they are already buying their material from that supplier.

Not what WE are suggesting at all, This is what the consumers are suggesting.

"I got my carpet from Aunt Clara's uncle Bob, No one will install the carpet unless I purchase NEW carpet from them! How much will you charge to come install the carpet I have sitting in my garage?"

Contractor: No problem, we do it all the time. Your cost to have us install your carpet would be $***. (Includes our normal rate for regular job less cost of carpet per our allowance schedule)

Customer: Wow! But Lowe's is offering $199.00 installs.

Contractor: I should tell you that if you do hire us for your project it will be 6-8 weeks before we can do it. We need to be fair to those that have already hired us.

Is the cost your only concern? (shut up here and listen)

Is their level of service adequate for your needs? (Shut up again, keep listening)

Their answers will tell you wether you have this sale or recommend they call Lowe's. You can't compete with the giants on price, but they can't compete with us on service either. If you sell the job make sure you get your markup on the carpet if your business relies on marking up materials.

Good Luck
Dave

[quote/]Maybe you should break down your prices just like they do. Tell them you only charge $5 for the whole house, but you charge for every part just like they do.[/quote]

It's always hard to compete with HD or Lowes when it comes to things like flooring. Since your price will be higher you need to explain to the customer why your service is better, why they should go with you over them. It could be as simple as things like: "we always follow up with a phone call or visit to make sure you're happy with your new flooring" Small things like that sometimes make a difference.

Re: What Customers DON'T See!! Warning Post Contains Pricing Info!

If you are busy dicussing price with a client to no end, then you have already lost.
Only when you sell goods should you haggle price....labor should never be negotiated.
If you find yourself negotiating quality of service and labor, well.....that's just too bad.
I try to add a bit of humor to end the conversation quickly. Such as:

I have a laborer who will install for $150.00! That will definately beat the home store price. However he is still not sober, but as soon as he is, we will call ya!
The client then knows that nobody will install for that price.....and it's just a numbers game.

That was going to be my point. Customer came in with that $199 BS, but when I asked how much she was quoted for the carpet...$8 SY more then we retail!!!! (They private label, so it's hard sometimes to find crossovers) Needless to say, we got an easy sale. I believe it was Mike who said it a few post back...crappy installers also.

*Disclaimer: Prices stated for basic installation require purchase of both Special Order carpet and pad from Lowe's for installation in single family residential homes.
She'll call back...unless she is too embarrassed too...
