what to bid

hi., i am new to this site and i would like to get some feedback. I have been installing residential floors in houston tx for several years. i am now trying to get into commercial projects. one project is new construction 16, 000 sq ft of vct and 4,000 ft of carpet tiles labor only. The type of floor requested for vct is just the basic and the carpet tiles is fire retardent. I also can bid on 8,000 ft of vct and 15,ooo ft of carpet tiles ( labor only). I have no idea what to bid because i know prices are different for commercial jobs. Houston tx

Why are "prices different"? If you know how long it will take you to do the work, and what it costs to be in business for that number of hours, just calculate what you need to charge and submit the bid. Forget about what "everyone one else is charging"- you need $XX to do the job, so bid $XX or more.

Of course, if you can't figure out how many hours it'll take, or you don't know your costs of doig business, that's a different problem altogether, and you shouldn't be bidding any work- especially commercial.

Do not buy into that B.S. way of thinking friend. In my experience the ONLY advantage to commercial work is volume. That hardly makes up for all of the aggravations caused by pushy GC's who can't schedule properly, site conditions way out of tolerance for the product going down, other contractors lack of respect for finish work, lack of parking or access to your work area, last minute change orders, unrealistic designers who don't know jack about how the job is really done, or maybe the worst if your just starting out- waiting on your money. I am sure there are more but you get the idea. So with all that being said...unless you have perfect conditions do not charge less than you would for any other job, work smarter not harder.

He must have changed his mind when he saw the "twenty-five cents" post.
