What Is This?
I removed a 20sq ft section of oak hard wood floor today that buckled from water damage. Under the oak is what looks like mortar on top of OSB. This is in a townhouse condo on the second floor. What's the deal? According to the customer there was carpet before she had the wood put down. Why is there mortar/cement in the living room/ dining room area?

Re: What Is This?
Could be a self leveling compound to true up the subfloor before laying the hardwood. OK for minor deficiencies but not any structural problems

Re: What Is This?
How thick is it? Around here there are a lot of former apartment buildings turned into condos and most of them had a 1 1/2" lightweight concrete over OSB floor on the 2nd floor, it helps reduce noise and acted as sort of a fire barrier.

Re: What Is This?
Sounds like gypcrete. As mentioned before, it is a sound barrier as well as a added fire rating. We are building apartments right now that use a 3/4'' layer on the second and third floors.
