VCT stairs

Hi all!

I'm quoting a customer for 7 stories of vct stairs and landings, 4 ft tread width. Existing is vct over wood subfloor, it is being replaced because of loose tiles, and gaps. What type of problems have you guys run into with this type of installation, and how much should I be charging per stair?

Charge whatever you are comfortable with but DON'T WARRANTY THAT WORK for any reason. VCT on stairs has always been problematic. That's probably why the tile is being replaced to begin with. VCT tiles on stairs gap and come loose, the wood contributes to the issues.

There would be less risk in hand feeding alligators from a rubber raft.

Thanks for the reply Bud. Thats kinda what I was thinking; the stairs might be flexing or growing, leading to the gapping. It's one of those jobs where I would steer clear entirely exept for that I want the account for carpet work.

By the way, I havent actually done vct stairs before, so if anyone with experience would shoot me a private message on what they charge, or what they pay, it would be helpfull.

Never seen stairs done with VCT. Big time slip hazard!!! If they have VCT iin the corridors, they always had Rubber Safety Treads.

Best way to price is do time and material. Work all that out then divide out the stairs/ landings, if any. I would normally price this as a whole rather than per stair.
Vinyl on stairs should not be a problem. Done thousands of metres of it.
Sometimes Tread Alert is called for but not much.

I would not do it.
Tell them the truth about it being a very bad idea and sell them some hard surface vinyl or stair treads.
Your name will still be on it after the warranty goes out and it begins to fail.
