Vapor Barrier Needed?

Good morning everyone. I'm placing some tongue and groove cedar (stained and polyed on the show out side) on a ceiling in a bathroom. Just nailing it to the drywall ceiling. People will be taking daily showers in the bathroom - I was wondering if a vapor barrier of some sort was necessary for something like that? Or am I ok just nailing it to the drywall without it? Thanks very much in advance for any replies.

Roy

Nailing it to the drywall? You're looking for one big mess in a little while aren't you?

WOW!

Being new to this site, I'm trying to keep my head down and just read quietly without comment, but... someone's gonna get hurt on this one!

Stop what you are doing! Drywall can't even hold a shower rod and curtain assembly up on a wall if it's not secured properly, let alone flooring slats on a ceiling. That wood flooring your attaching is far too heavy to be secured thru drywall. If it doesn't fall on you while installing it, it will fall soon! Seriously... Stop!

don't know if you need a vapor barrier. There should already be one in the ceiling insulation ( it's insulated, right?) But if you run your boards perendicular to the ceiling joists, you would have nailing into those ceiling joists. Is this ouside the shower?

I assume everyone that reads this has the mental capacity to know that the poster meant that he was nailing the boards over/on top of/ covering the wall board...actually nailing it to the framing/joists/ deadwood ...not nailing it to the gypsum wall board...DUH

well maybe you are right...not sure why this thread is posted under "flooring" . I thought this forum was for people in the construction business. I can't imagine a contractor not knowing that you cant just nail a wood cieling to sheetrock. ..and I'm not new to anything.

They may mean to nail through the sheet rock, into the rafters, like I did my ceiling.
