Uneven finish

How do you prevent the overlap mark in water finishes?

The finish edge is wet, I don't let it get dry so I avoid that cresting edge.

But I notice these thicker areas that follow the direction of my applicator. It looks like a "puddling strip", well not exactly a strip, but about a 2 to 3 inch wide thickening. It has a slightly different sheen because of it. It isn't raised or anything, so I can't peel it off or anything. It just looks like the finish went on thicker, like a puddling effect.

I don't see it until the finish is dry. Maybe I'm putting on the finish too thick? I'm just afraid it will contrast even more if I go too thin. I've heard you can cut the edges of the applicator to taper at a diagonal which might help.

Any suggestions?

I think I know what your talking about. But I like to get low, and see the light hit the floor, then I can see those lines that just pile up. I just pull them out as I go. I also pull the water finish thin. I find it hard to apply it as even as I want if it is too thick.

I wonder what kind of applicator you are using. We use those tube-like applicators. They have them now where they are pre-waited down, kinda heavy. Ours is not but you need to press on it some and eavenly. Anyway my guess would be you are not pressing down on one side of your applicator enough. Also too, every time you make a new lap dont come over a full length of the applicator go about 3/4 the way and use the lines in the floor to keep it straight. Try not to stop either. Good luck.

Always let your puddle split your applicator and like adam said, use the lines to keep straight.

What brand of roller do you use Justin? I might try it on my next job.

we use 1,4 nap wooster or purdy white rollers for oil.rub them out or wrap tape around it to remove loose fibers, this helps to make sure there are no flat spots also. email me and i will give you my cell number if you like. justin moesavage@hotmail.com
