Underlay?
I was talking to a floor installer and he said that he never does a lino without luan underlay. Why not just sand deck (advantex) and a little thin set if necessary? Any problem down the road with seams?

Re: Underlay?
Luan is crap anyway.
Vinyl manufacturers do not warranty all problems when it's used. AC grade plywood is the ONLY wood substrate for Vinyl.

We use luan all the time for our flooring. Everytime there has been a problem with it ( usually do to someone dragging something over it and ripping it) its always be covered by the warranty. Of course that might just be our dealer.

Re: Underlay?
staining from Luan is the most common problem.
vinyl manufacturers will cover some things, not as much as AC though.

Maybe we are just lucky cause we've never had a problem with any staining from luan. Dad has been building homes for about 25 years now and always uses luan and haven't had a problem yet with it staining. Like I said maybe we are just lucky I guess.

Re: Underlay?
Have a problem with a seam that has come up about 4-6 inches and about 18 inches apart. Installer tried to glue it once, didn't work, came back with some solvent type cement the second time.
I've ordered a piece of vinyl and will attempt to splice it at about 3 inches (pattern repeat) from old line. Am planning to overlay at match point, and cut thru both at once, then glue down. Any tips or comments? Thanks again guys! Teddo |

But Vinyl manufacturers have dealt with more jobs with Luan than you and I both. They have stated clearly what they cover and don't cover with Luan. Luan is not as risky as particle board, although not as safe as AC. middle of the road I guess
