travatine install prices

I do mostly extier tile but got a friend who whants to do the inside of his office, pretty square, no cuts. So I want to see if I'm close with all you do is tile guys. Remember it is San Diego area. It is 240 sq.ft. of 18 by18 travertine to install over wood floor first 1/2'' hardy-backer then the tile, tight joints, maybe 1/16, how much a sqft. or install only owner buys material. How many squares a day can a tile guy and labor set a day.

I usually charge $6.00 a s/f for interior tile. I could probably install the backer, lay the tile, and grout that with my one helper in 2-3 days max. If its as easy as you say....very few cuts like one big open room, you might think of doing it a little cheaper.

I'm not a full time tile guy....just a general that occassionally does his own tile and owns a crap load of tile tools!!!

Does the floor structure meet the necessary criteria for a stone tile installation? Stone tiles require a floor structure that is twice as strong as what is required for ceramic tile. Most floors are not built that strong to begin with.

thanks on the travertine insight

Good point Bud. The subfloor is 1 by 6 over 16'' o.c. joist with 1/2'' wood flooring then I was going to use 1/2'' hardie backer thin set and nailed down. But I'm hearing on the 18 by 18 tile with no joints goes a little slower between 50 & 60 sq.ft. a day tender and seter. Sound about right

Hate to say it, but your in way over your head!!!

Your going to need a more dimensionally stable panel, like plywood, over the wood flooring, or remove the wood flooring and install the plywood.

I sure hope you just measured wrong (or rounded down). 1x6??????????

I'm thinking more of 2x10 with 3/4" t&g and then 5/8" ply. Now 1/4" CBU.

At that point you still may need to further support the joists.

I agree with Floordude, you're in deep!

THE FJS CANT BE 1X6. THEY USED 1X6 FOR THE FLOOR SHEATHING, HE HAS NOT TOLD US WHAT THE FJS ARE. THEY MAY BE ENOUGH TO GET STARTED WITH BUILDING A GOOD SUB FLOOR. HIS STONE SHOULD BE LAID ON MUD. MORE DETAILS ARE NEEDED. THIS IS NOT COMPLICATED.
