Re: Tileing Countertops
Small removable frame with 3/4 ply screwed and glued together. Frame to cab, just screwed. Backer board screwed on ply with thin set. Tile over, grout, then drink beer.
If your installing a backsplash, incorporate that to the frame. Bob

Re: Tileing Countertops
Be sure to check back. I imagine some of the other fellas have some cool methods as well.
Also, I like to use fiberbond backer in that application. Bob

Re: Tileing Countertops
I use 2 layers of marine grade ply, 3/4" ea. as a base. Tile can be set in a variety of manners. I push a high temp epoxy as a setting medium. It protects the ply and allows the top to be used for anything.

Bob quit drinking, one reason that I'm not in a rush to get up there. He does claim to play billiards though. I'm wondering how badly I can trash him.

Re: Tileing Countertops
Countertops, 2 layers of plywood, ext. grade AC or BC, 1/2" over 3/4", then 1/4" backerboard installed in unmodified thinset and screwed down, or use a membrane instead of the CBU, use strips of CBU on the face of the framing for the tile also, screw and thinset them on.
If you use CBU, you can use Redgard over the whole thing if you want it waterproofed as well. |

Re: Tileing Countertops
Single layer of 3/4 exposure 1 plywood(or Advantek) plus a layer of 3/8, Ditra and Ditraset + Spectralock Pro grout. Any other method will be vastly inferior in that application.

Re: Tileing Countertops
I actually just turned down a countertop job because I didnt know how. I would have known it was that easy I would sold that one in a heartbeat.
I got a question though, Is it absolutley necessary to use plywood or frame the countertop? Couldnt you just cut off any rounded edges from the counter and just attach backer board and then apply the tile? Plus if your countertop is one that has the 3" high lip on the backsplash wall how would you go about framing/tiling that? I would think that 3/4" plus backerboard plus the tile would be a complaint catcher as far as the hieght goes? Anyone ever had any complaints about the new hieght? Thanks...........CM |

Re: Tileing Countertops
The truth be known, most are so behind the times that I don't reply to many topics. Go here http://www.loctite.com/int_henkel/loctite/entry.cfm
and learn. I can stick a tile to your chest and you'll have to live with it until the skin sloghes off. On the chest, that would be a month or so.
