Tile Guys I Need Some Help
hi guys,
being a pool guy I have turned out some really nice bathroom tilework for myself friends & family. I have built mortor tile showers floors etc. granted I'm not a tile pro. I definitely need some professional guidance. my brother asked me to do his bathroom. his house built in 1880 & no level floors anywhere (actually not even close.) no sub-floors, just stained old boards. huge planks actually. (imo he bought 4000sqft of work, but to each his own.) how would I attack a job like this. ty ray

Re: Tile Guys I Need Some Help
If the floor is not level, can you rip up the sub-floor, shim/level the joists, then lay a sub-floor down again? Then put what ever you want to set the tile on and go to town.

Re: Tile Guys I Need Some Help
Why not use a floor leveling compound? Then you can tile over that.
Just searching and this stuff looked good http://www.edisoncoatings.com/html/S...te_floor_t.htm

Re: Tile Guys I Need Some Help
Shim and level under an overlay of plywood on a 45º to the wide plank. then use your choice of uncoupling, before the tiles.

Like Matt says mud and lath and moisture proofing where required. You can make the worst floors flat and level with deck mud.

Re: Tile Guys I Need Some Help
I agree with the rest, a drypack mud base will level it out nicely, and give a great base for the tile. He also might want to consider a floor-warming mat like NuHeat or something. Being built in the 1880's I doubt the house has a good basement, if at all. You don't say what part of the country this is in, but up north a tile floor is chilly, even cold in the winter.
