Thinset Removal

We're using jack hammers to take up ceramic tile in a local shopping mall. The hammers are only popping up the tiles in most places, and aren't taking up much of the thinset. Does anyone know of a quick way to remove the thinset after we get the tiles popped off?

If you want to make your life easier, thow away the jack hammers and go rent a riding floor scraper (like a Bronco, or Renegade or National machine). They will get the tile up much quicker and take more of the thin set with it. To get the rest of the thin set off, you may need to rent a concrete grinder or a drum scarifier. Hope that helps...

depending on sq.ft ride on or even a walk behind, or all the way upto a bobcat attachment if you prefer. search, man different models that will suite you. good luck

For a mall, a shotblaster is the thing to use. You'll take up a few thousand feet of thinset a night. Trust me-- I did this work back years ago for a company called Total Flooring out of Florida. We went all over the country doing new mall construction, as well as renovation.

you best way is a floor grinder if its under 1000 sq ft if over im gonna guess there is an attachment for some sort walk behind skid steer

Now, don't let the prices shock you-- both machines are readily available for rent in most big municipal areas. Of course, if this is something you do on a constant basis, it might be worth your while to looking into purchase. Both these machines could very easily pay for themselves rather quickly if you have the work for them.
