Tar Like Adhesive

I removed some old 1963'ish tiles.

There is a black smelly sticky tar like adhesive residue stuck on the wooden sub-floor.

I want to lay down laminate but need to tend to the old adhesive.

Any ideas on how to prep the floor?

Thanks,
Cr

Don't know the circumstances of your job, but you may want to have that mastic tested for asbestos.

Op, read that again and then go do what it says. Not worth the slow death that stuff yields, or the fine not addressing it properly yields.

Yup, everyones a few drops away from looking almost as good as Rex. The company sent me an apology letter and offered me some free drops.

The tiles you took out ? wer they 9in x 9in? most likely asbestos. get it tested. or it could be cooking grease and self stick tile adhesive... need more info or pictures

Re: Tar Like Adhesive

It's kind of shocking that a general contractor doesn't know where he's BOUND to run into asbestos flooring, adhesives and underlayment.

Or maybe he was going to be the 'floor guy' and now will dump it off on a flooring subcontractor?

Re: Tar Like Adhesive

Good thing it's your property. You could get sued by a homeowner for many thousands of dollars, since I am sure you are not licensed to remove asbestos, and then the EPA could fine you a few thousand more.

I think 'general' or 'general contractor' are the titles chosen most by some folks for a reason.

When he was asking a 'how to' question on plumbing, he said he was a painter.

That wasn't at all "deep" in my memory although I took my test almost 20 years ago. They MAKE SURE you can't play dumb later on down the line when you're found tearing up people's homes and business and exposing them to asbestos.

Anyways, I give people the benefit of the doubt. It's shocking, but not impossible for people to forget stuff or to somehow have passed that open book "exam," sign the verification that you understood the health dangers and LIABILITIES without really learning details like WHERE asbestos actually will be found.

Make no mistake. I believe the whole issue of asbestos is mostly a racket------but it's all about the liability.

No worries Seaside. There's virtually zero enforcement in a residential project. Here's another article I found that I generally agree with. For this one I was digging a little;http://fumento.com/asbestos/asbest.html

A large part of that though is people coming into the flooring, specifically the tile section, knowing nothing or little, then asking very basic questions that are on the level of an 86 year old homeowning grandmother. They are too lazy to do any of the legwork themselves, even such simple things as reading the directions, watching the manufacturers videos, or buying a basic how-to book from a big box store.

They're just lazy and lazy people annoy me, especially when they're asking me to do their work for them....
