Sub-flooring For Sheet Goods

I'm Faced With A 1955 House With A Tile Floor Layed On 1/2 Inch Plywood That Is Now Rotted In Places And Scared From Trying To Remove All The Adhesive. Should I Just Replace The Sub Floor, And If So, Put Plywood Or Another Type Sub Floor Material. New Floor Will Be A Sheet Good Product. If I Just Patch Rotted Spots Should I Use A Leveler Prior To Installing The New Floor?

I would replace all the plywood that is rotten once you remove the rotten spots then you will be able to see if the joists are rotten as well if they are, they would need attention too. Do you know what caused the plywood to rot? once thats resolved and fixed I would lay 1/4'' underlay on top of the 1/2'' I use 1 5/8" diversion staples to fasten the underlay , in the seams every 2" and every 4" in the field. Then patch the underlay seams with polymer modified patching compound then your ready to lay the new sheet good.

I will agree with all of that except patching the joints of underlayment. Sanding them is a better option imo. Patching actually promotes telegraphing in sheet goods. As the floor expands and contracts the patch breaks up and forms a ridge, showing the seam.

I use Halex or Multiply. Both are a 5 ply baltic birch panel, available in either 4X5 or 4X4 sheets. I prefer 4X5 myself, it is easier to offset your joints from the get go.
