Starting Hardwood Flooring Business

I have been in the hardwood floor business for 12+ years for the past few years I have been thinking of going into business for myself I have purchased all the tools for installation and sanding an I bought a van. I don't have a lot of money saved ($1500) I'm not sure how to go about getting jobs I know I can go to flooring stores and sub contract and advertise and I know word of mouth is key but I have a family to take care of and I kind of need work to come in. Any Ideas of were to look for work. Anything else I should know before I step out into the self employment world?

Going to other stores can really be the easiest way to start.

the pay is lower than if you advertised and got your own work. But there will be no cost of ads, and work can come quick.

First off, Congradulations!! Good for you!
I just opened my mouth to everyone about starting a flooring business. Carried a stack of cards around at all times. I got lucky and blabbed to a acquaintence who happened to be a gc. He gave me work for 2.5 years! Keep yapping your chops and turn the conversation into what your trying to accomplish with everyone (your new business)!! good luck

Excellent advice Pasquale, I'm always promoting my company everywhere I go. I've received plenty of work from it. People always know someone thats looking to get work done it seems.

Same here. You would be suprised how many jobs I have gotten out of the big boxes just by asking a confused looking customer if they need some help as I just happen to be in the flooring business. I hand them a card and tell them to call me if they need advice or an install. Make cards and put them out everywhere you can...some of the cheapest advertising in the world.
