Sound proofing underlayment under vinyl floor, Where & What, Pricing?
I am going to install some vinyl flooring in a doctors office.
This doctor doens't want the clicks of heals to disrupt his other patients, so i need to come up with some type of material to help sound proof the floor -- i.e underlayment.
What type of underlayment would i get that would be rigid enough for vinyl yet still be sound proof the floor?
Thanks guys

"doctor doesn't want the clicks of heals to disrupt his"
He wears heals?
Where are the other patients - below, besides, above the room
What type of floor are we talking about - concrete, wood
The walls, doors, etc... must also be taken into account
Sorry but we actually need info to legitimately give you any sort of answer
Thicker vinyl flooring - carpet in the hallways

roll out some cork, cover with luan and glue your vynil to that..
cork comes in 2 thicknesses and in 500 sf rolls about .60 a sf...

Bad idea to use Luan.
Best to use a sound reducing Vinyl.
Call up a local CarpetOne store and ask to see the Titanium level Earthscapes.
That will do the trick.
USE PLYWOOD!

Luan is plywood. Of course it is not supposed to be used as underlayment, but it is plywood.

Agreed. However manufacturers do not fully warranty when using it.

Yes there is.
That's why manufacturers will warranty some things but not others (with Luan)
Check out www.armstrong.com for details.
I do however agree that Luan would be cheapest...

you say tomato I say tomato..
not a VINYL installer, but one thing i have learned after nearly 16 years installing/contracting...
not everything is as they say... guidelines are helpful and useful, but they are just that..they get formed when negative experience happens, but they are not gospel all the time and manufacturers are the worst...some manufacturer guidelines are worse than industry guidelines..just more reasons to limit their stake in the game.. and void warranties..
in 16 years, i have yet to see luan delaminate or fail..
sure, can it happen?? why not,,, but whats the chnaces? I'll check the few extra sheets floating in the yard for the last 1+ years...been exposed to weather now for that long...

Weather you have seen it or not, fact is manufacturers will not warranty over it.
Don't know about you but I'm not rich enough to take chances with a floor in someone else's house

Delam is not the problem. It's staining.....
And yes I agree with the previous post...
Good advice sticks to manufacturers recommendations...
Anything outside of that should come with a disclaimer....

i had a laminate failure but because i used their product and methods they backed me up. try skipping just one of their reccommendations and your toast.
saved myself the material cost 4,500 and all the labor to redo. that's good enough for me to follow the directions.

Vinyl Plank Flooring
If you haven't already started the job discuss the difficulties in sound proofing linoleum. Then tell him about vinyl plank flooring. Mohawk has some cheap (for vinyl planks) offerings called Congoleum which is more soundproof than linoleum. Also, tell him that he can get the look of hardwood by going this route, and that if there is any damage that occurs over time it is easy to replace damaged planks. If he is a doctor then he can probably afford it, and your cost on the product should be about $1.09/sq.ft. (his price of course would be your mark-up on the product). Lastly, let the doctor know that the manufacture warranty on the product is better than with linoleum.

I'm having a real hard time with these few items....
You want to do some research and re-evaluate this "advice"?
