Re: Signing Your Work

at age 16 I knew how to sign my work, lol

spelled out "Oh Mike" across these new condos we were painting, I did one letter on each bay window of 6 buildings in 6 foot letters what was I thinking.

Should of heard the foreman when he left and came back, you could only see what I did as you were pulling in.

Re: Signing Your Work

Hi.
I have not done it yet. Seems like a very good idea.
I thougth about a nice name on the treshold or some place with my company name. I was thinking about it one day when I was pissing all the toilets have the name and this one had even 800 number :-)
I thought why don't I do it.
Now imagine that every painter, kitchen cabinet, window guy, carpet and hardwood floor guy left a name in your house I would feel like in las vegas :-)
Seriously though I think it is possible just imagine some nice stamp in the corner off the main door threshold, or just in any corner, I don't think anybody would mind. And imagine when there is clients party someone says oh nice floor who has done it. Well the oak floor but look he has left the stamp in the corner.
I can't believe nobody is yet selling stamps like this.

Cheeres.

Re: Signing Your Work

Personally I see this as a sign of pride in ones work; I would much rather hire a professional that's willing to put his 'stamp' on his work, than someone who is only wanting to see his name on the cheque (as someone stated earlier).

Re: Signing Your Work

I mostly work with wood now so I have a nifty little 'branding iron' I bought from either Rocklers or Woodcraft (can't remember which). You basically put your signature on a computer screen and your company name and 2 weeks later you get the branding iron mailed to you.

Normally, I'll brand the back or bottom of my work, where no one will ever see it unless they really look hard but some times when doing an inlaid door or intarsia wall piece or whatnot, if the customer let's me (always ask), I'll brand it on the bottom somewhere. If they say "no", I just do it on one of the final pieces (on the back).

Right on! I think so, too. I want to 'own' the work I have done. To 'sign' my work shows pride. At the end of the job, I like more than just the check.

Re: Signing Your Work

I have never signed my work. But I have a story that ties in. Back in the late 90's I was doing a big remodel job in town. We were on the job for about two months. During the last week we were doing some final demo in the foyer and behind a sheet was an inscription that said "Petra Construction 1987. I thought, hey I worked at Petra in 1987. Then it hit me. Back in 1987 I was hanging drywall in the upper foyer of this house and fell from a bench down to the first floor and got knocked out cold. It was the only day I worked on the house back then. We had been there for 2 months and I had no clue that I had ever been to this place before. Then again as I recall from the accident, I didnt remeber much of anything for a short time due to temporary amnesia. It was definitely a spooky feeling being at that house the rest of the week.
