Shower valves--filling in around them

I am new to the group, sorry if this is not posted correctly.
I was wondering if anyone has perfected the procedure of filling around the shower valves or other penetrations to keep moisture out of the wall cavity. I notice Schluter has a product Kerdi seal MV. I haven't used it, but i think that's the idea I am looking for. In past experiences using silicone around the trim as a secondary means of protection was done but I would like to see a full proof system or method any suggestions?
