Sandmix With Milk For Setting Ceramic On Slab?

I never heard of this, but i seen it down on a house yesterday. It was on a basement slab, slab was it unever, so they used sandmix with milk to buildup and set ceramic.

Personally, i wouldnt do it, i think its trouble down the road.

Question, (im guess not,) but it this an acceptable practice?
What advantage does thinset offer over a sandmix/milk mixture?

Thanks

Sounds like yet another home remedy ! Not sure that procedure exists in any of the "rule books". That's not to say it wouldn't work but why keep trying to re-invent the wheel when there are hords of quality products available to do this with?

primer and SLC would have been a good choice to create a level substrate ready for tile

Or if they needed to build up the floor, portland and sand would have been a better, and "approved" mix.
But wondering why they had to build up a basement floor?

I see nothing wrong with this method. Was it stone or tile?

Sandmix is about a 3:1 mix of Sand to Portland and milk only made it stronger.

We set stone this way. Thinset the concrete, throw down your deck mud and fluff, thinset your stone and beat it into the fresh mud. Makes for a flat and fast floor.

If it's real cow type milk, it would have fat in it. Fat would weaken some bonds due to isolation. Kind of like putting oil or butter into rice to keep it from sticking together.

Maybe it wasnt real milk! Something like soy milk, then it would be fat free.

Chocolate milk for dark colored tile and white milk for light colored tile. Strawberry milk has been used on occaision but it tends to stick to the teeth of the trowel.

Re: Sandmix With Milk For Setting Ceramic On Slab?

im assuming you guys know what i mean by milk lol..

back on topic, is this an acceptable method? If i had a really bad floor, let say a few inches and i want a level floor, could I use this mix and set my tile? Sand , portland, milk... no water in this mix?

what about porcelain tile? Could I use this mix to set tile?
