sanding a wood floor?

Got to get this done at my house, pulled up the old carpet that was a mess, and found a great looking hardwood floor, but it needs refinished. I've seen those sanders but they make a dusty mess, and i dont want the dust althrough the house, what other options do i have? the room is 16x20.

I refinished 3 large rooms a week before xmas. I was sanding for about 12 hours starting with 20grt all the way to 120grt.
I taped the doors and put towels down along the bottoms I also vac. (shop vac with a hepa filter) floor when ever the sawdust started to build up. I still had some dust, but it wasn't realy that bad. one thing I wish I had done was tape off my kitchen cabinets (forgot) I can still find a dish here and there that is a little dusty.

Sanding floors

Yes i did consider hanging platic between rooms, the only problem is that this is a middle room and is between the great room and Kitchen, I figured that i could do it and get all the sanding done then remove the platic time for sanding depends on me and how hard and late iam willing too work, as for the finshing i would'nt need the platic? Thanks for the reply! I had saw on a DIY show where they used a sander that left No dust, but i would guess that would coast a pretty penny to owne or rent if you could even find 1.

The rooms I did were also in the center of the house. If at all pssible do it all at once. Sand then stain, The more traffic that happens when you wait will just make matters worse.
I had all of the rooms sanded, and let my cats down for a short time, and ended up haveing to re-vac for an hour due to cat hair.
It's worth the short term sacrifces to have it done right and over.
kick everyone out for 24 hours, kennel the pets, buy some new CD's and rock and roll
