Sanding Prefinished Hardwood

Is it worth the time and effort to sand off the alluminum oxide finish of a pre-finished hardwood, or would I just be wasting my time?

that stuff is very difficult to sand off and if you don't get it all off you will have a splotchy finish. It is better to screen the floor and recoat with a product that is compatible with aluminium oxide. You can get from Floor Styles.com

Yea I definitely need to sand it off. Where can I get the Red Heat sandpaper? I am assuming even with that it will be a pain.

The key is to hit it with 80 first and then go to 40 or 60. It sounds funky, but it works way better then hitting it with 40 or 60 first.

Re: Sanding Prefinished Hardwood

Thanks for the info, I am a tile guy mostly but I have been known to work with the wood every now and then. I would like to eventually work my way towards wood floors full time, but right now tile is bringing in the cash!

Re: Sanding Prefinished Hardwood

red heat can be bought through most hardwood distribution centers...call a few floor guys in your phone book and ask if their vendor carries Norton.

i have never tried 80 over prefinished 1st...got 1500 feet coming up next week .. I'll give a shot and see... what the heck... only take a second to test it out......you can never stop learning no matter how good you are!

Re: Sanding Prefinished Hardwood

mega can be used as a top coat for alum/oxide but i recommend you use the bona prep system for abrading and cleaning the floor. For best results I use bona-traffic because it adheres better than mega though this double finish material cost. If you ever had to sand a prefinished alum/oxide floor you know that you sure as hell don't wanna do one for free cuz your top-coat didn't stick
