Reclaimed Wood Floors.

Has anyone on here use reclaimed wood? The architect said this wood is going to come in varying widths. I imagine this wood will have to be milled and get a tongue and groove put into it. Are hardwood floor guys in the chicago area have experiance with this? I would be interested in getting a bid for a whole house in chicago.

Re: Reclaimed Wood Floors.

Reclaimed can be old floors salvaged from a demo job usually its a historic or well maintained house that is being gutted or old wood say like from a barn made into flooring. Here in DC it is salvaged from old houses and reused on other projects. Usually for historic or patch jobs for authenticity. I have used some for a few historic jobs that require you to match up existing stuff takes sometime and all of what you buy won't be usable.

The wood is usually a pine here in DC and its amazing when you cut it it smells so good like brand new stuff and its usuALLY 100+ years old

I KNOW THIS DOESN'T HELP BUT I HAVE A WEAKNESS FOR OLD OR HISTORIC HOUSES

Re: Reclaimed Wood Floors.

Ulti,
We have been installing, sanding and finishing reclaimed antique heart pine flooring for many years. A reputable manufacturer mills some of it and some is milled by a mom and pop backyard mill and some is not milled at all so it is best to see the flooring before giving a firm price.

The fact that it is going to be random width will take more labor to install and a higher waste factor. If you are going to site sand and finish this reclaimed flooring it requires more sanding and extra steps for the finishing in most cases.

We have installed many pine floors that were made from reclaimed pine beams that were square edge, 2” thick 10 or 12” wide and some are 24' long and many other sizes.

Check it out before giving a price.

Re: Reclaimed Wood Floors.

I would recommend an installer with experience working with custom wood floors. Many wood floor installers now days only have experience with flooring that comes in a box. You can buy reclaimed flooring in a box and any installer can install it but you may run into some reclaimed flooring that could be 2,000 s.f.of 2” x 12” x 18’long square edge planks with no tong and groove and many installers will walk away from the job.

It all depends on the flooring you encounter.

Wood flooring installation, no matter what wood it is, is not just a slap it on the floor type of job. Sure, any Monkey can cut a board, and use a stick nailer, but there is a lot more science to it, then that.

On the hardwood consumer message boards, Chicago and the area around there, has the most complaints about shoddy craftsmanship.

There are some tricks of the trade and the person installing should have integrity. I dont see the science behind it really, a lot of people dont care about what they are doing. A good hard wood foor guy who cares about doing a nice job should be able to do it. My guy who does floors for me typically like oak and maple, he is just wam bam maniac and I dont want use him for this job. But hes great for smaller simple jobs.

Be sure both you and the customer have seen a job with the same grade of material as you are being sold. There is much difference between grades, ranging from beautiful, to stuff I would not use for attic flooring. Do not trucst the little samples, of course they will all look like an acceptable quality.

Re: Reclaimed Wood Floors.

I would have to agree with the member who suggested you deal with an installer that works specifically with reclaimed hardwood flooring. I'm in the NY area or I would help you out myself. As stated above you can buy it pre milled and if you have some wood you reclaimed yourself you could mill it with the proper tools if you have that kind of setup. I don't know about Chicago but there are a couple places around here that do that sort of thing. Good luck with it though, post some pictures when it's done and let us know how it turns out. If you need more info on some good distributors let me know, I have dealt with quite a few of them.
