Re-claimed Vertical grain fir Flooring

I Have a 1918 Seattle DIY project, currently in its 2nd year. I'm Looking at ways to refinish some old vertical grain fir flooring that has lead paint on it. Half of the flooring is original to my house and half I picked up Free from Craigslist. My First Question is.

1) How would You recomend I go about Preparing this flooring for reinstalation?

a) Is it easier to clean the T&G Channels on the flooring, reinstall w/the
LBP and sand the entire floor w/ a drum sander.

B) Or Should I clean the channels and strip the LBP w/Heat, before I plane
and install them?

Another problem is the sub flooring.

The original sub flooring (1"X8"s) run horizontal (Opposite To) to the floor joists. The fir flooring I have yet to remove also runs horizontal to the floor joists. The reclaimed flooring when I reinstall it will also run horizontal to the floor joists. My question is this.

2) Can I get away with screwing and gluing Non T&G 1/2 inch ply on top of the existing sub floor and reinstalling the T&G Flooring or will this cause problems?

My Reason for doing this, is to eliminate possible squeeks caused when the T&G edge lined up over a sub floor expansion crack (1/2'' with age shrinkage) and to even out the variations of the 1x8's.
The floor joists are sistered 2"X10"s on 16" ceneters spanning 12'.
Thank You!

Ahh you said lead paint that is a enviromental abatement issue. Sanding lead paint is dangerous.

Don't know your area or it's regs on the lead paint issue.

As far as your flooring (directional) issues, - - I think you mean to say 'perpendicular' rather than horizontal.

IMO, - - running the plywood is a good idea (I'd go with a more rigid 5/8's), - - run it perpendicular to your subfloor, - - then you can actually run your flooring either way, - - although perpendicular to the joists would probably give a better over-all job.

T.I.G. should not be necessary for your application.

P.S. Maybe re-installing the floor 'up-side down' is an option.

I just talked to my brother who does abatement. There are no regs but he suggest's if you sand to do a wet removal or scrap it. He also say's to wear a suit and a mask. No other precaustions are needed.

Have you had the paint checked? You may be worrying over nothing, not all old paint contained lead.

Coop, As far as the sub-floor goes I agree with Tom, 5/8" is the way to go I would run it perpendicular to the joists. You do have to clean up the tongues and grooves before install. As for the lead paint issue, YIKES, scrape, or run through a portable planer before hand, take all the appropriate precautions. You don't want all that lead dust in the house. When you do your final sanding be careful fir can be unforgiving to sand. Good luck.
